The Ultimate Guide to Dermalogica

Who Are Dermalogica?

If you want a skin care system that’s all about results, look no further than Dermalogica. If you want your skin care to come with fancy jars and famous spokesmodels, you’ll have to look elsewhere!

Developed by the International Dermal Institute, Dermalogica is known around the globe as the “professionals’ choice” when it comes to skincare. Every Dermalogica stockist must have a beauty therapist on staff to give an expert Face Mapping skin prescription, so that you can get results for your particular skin type or concern – whether it be ageing to acne, pigmentation, sensitivity, rosacea or dehydration.

With a focus on fragrance-free simple skin solutions, the Dermalogica range aims to cater for all skin types and contains capsule ranges for specific skin concerns.
Dermalogica’s story started in 1986 in the USA, when British skin therapist Jane Wurwand felt that the skin and body therapy education was undeveloped. Jane started The International Dermal Institute (IDI) in Marina del Rey, California. Since its conception, the Dermalogica range has grown to include a huge array of products that are free of common irritants and ingredients such as lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil and fragrances. Dermalogica products are Leaping Bunny approved.

Cosmeceuticals are scientifically produced products, which contain biologically active ingredients that have proven, clinical benefits. Cosmeceutical brands like Dermalogica deliver a higher concentration of active ingredients that can be delivered deeper into the skin, resulting in visible, long term results.

Where to start with Dermalogica?

Dermalogica’s base range, the Grey Line, is the foundation to a great skincare routine. Whether you’re just starting out in skincare or are an expert in active ingredients, this range offers the basics you’ll need to keep your skin happy, healthy and hydrated. If you’re not sure what products your skin type needs, check out Dermalogica’s Online Speed Mapping – answer a few quick questions, and you’ll instantly have product recommendations tailored to you.

Before you Cleanse

The first step to any great skincare regime is making sure your skin is thoroughly cleansed. Dermalogica offer their Precleanse in both a liquid and wipe formula, so you can be sure your skin is ready for the rest of your routine.

Research by the International Dermal Institute has found that women typically spend just three seconds washing their face? Due to just how much product we put on our faces (whether it’s a full face of makeup or just sunscreen), a single cleanse isn’t enough to fully wash away the day’s grime. The first cleanse is all about removing dirt and makeup, allowing your second cleanser to work its full potential and leave your skin super clean.

Dermalogica Cleansers

A clay based cleanser for oily, breakout prone skin

A rich non foaming cleanser for dry, dehydrated skin

A soap free foaming gel for normal to combination skin

Dermalogica Moisturisers

Three moisturisers (one for every skin type), plus a mix in SPF booster for during the day. It’s so simple, what’s not to love?

Exfoliating Your Skin: What Are the Benefits?

Exfoliation is an important part of your skincare routine. Both your face and body benefit from regular exfoliation. Adding an exfoliator to your skincare routine can improve the look and feel of your skin in several ways. Read on to discover the main benefits of exfoliating.

Exfoliation is the removal of dead cells from the surface of the skin. Our skin generally renews itself around every 30 days. A build-up of dead skin cells can result in rough, uneven, or dull skin.

Mechanical exfoliation means physically removing the skin cells. This can be done with a device such as a microfibre cloth, or a product such as a scrub or at-home microdermabrasion system. Most exfoliating products contain tiny granules or beads that gently slough away the skin.

Chemical exfoliation works by dissolving dead skin cells with special ingredients such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). Chemical exfoliators can be found in cleansers, toners, moisturisers, serums, peels, and special treatment pads.

To brighten your complexion: As we get older, our skin cell turnover begins to slow down, and dead skin cells build up on the surface of the skin. This build-up causes the skin to appear dull and uneven. Using an exfoliator will help remove these dead cells and brighten the complexion. You’ll find exfoliators aimed at most skin types. Sensitive skins should opt for a gentle scrub, such as Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant, which helps to soften and smooth the skin without feeling harsh.

To help clear the skin of impurities: Dead skin cells block pores and trap sebum, contributing to spots such as whiteheads, blackheads, and red blemishes. Using a chemical exfoliator, such as Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer, removes dead cells and promotes skin cell renewal with , AHAs from fruit extracts. The product also contains salicylic acid, a BHA, which helps to clear up blemishes. Unlike AHAs, BHAs can exfoliate inside the pore.

To help promote a youthful appearance: As exfoliation promotes skin cell renewal, it helps to reveal a healthier and glowing complexion. Skin looks softer, smoother, and more even. A great scrub for mature skin types is Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub, which contains natural Corn Cob Meal to leave the skin with a smooth, healthy complexion.

To help remove dry, rough skin: Adding an exfoliator to your skincare routine will help manage dry or rough skin. The Gentle Cream Exfoliant is tailored towards dry skin types and is formulated with Aloe Vera and Lavender to soothe dry skin, while removing rough dead skin cells from the surface. For dry skin on the body, use the Dermalogica Exfoliating Body Scrub, as this is designed to be more abrasive (body scrubs should never be used on the face – your body skin is much thicker than your delicate face skin)

Dermalogica’s Specialist Product Ranges

Alongside their comprehensive Grey Line, Dermalogica have specialist product ranges, dedicated to treating specific skin concerns. Whether you’re looking for anti-ageing products to protect your skin from future damage, something to assist you with that impending breakout-of-doom or a product to brighten dull or pigmented skin, Dermalogica has you covered.

So, let’s get into the ranges:

Age Smart is the Dermalogica range dedicated to premature ageing and mature skins. Indications for use of this range include fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, loss of elasticity, dilated capillaries, redness, loss of tension, dryness, and skin thickness due to lack of cell turnover.

This range concentrates on the visual signs of ageing and will help increase collagen production, increase the elasticity of the skin, improve the skin’s smoothness and helps fight those nasty free radicals.

The Dermalogica UltraCalming range is a complete system to help manage the multiple causes behind sensitised, inflamed skin, which can stem from a genetic predisposition towards sensitivity or as a result from environmental assaults. If your skin is irritated, prone to Rosacea, redness or dryness, this is the range for you.

The UltraCalming range is designed to reduce redness, create a protective barrier between the skin and outside environmental aggressors, and helps to strengthen skin cell structure against water loss and defend against dehydration-induced sensitisation.

Young, acneic skin has a different set of needs to that of adults. Teen skin experiences more oiliness, particularly around the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin), and has smaller, superficial comedones (bumpy, pimply skin). For those who are predisposed to hereditary breakouts, oil may also be thicker and stickier.

Clear Start takes a multi-level approach to clearing teenage acne, combining the best of nature’s botanicals and the science of skin care. The formulas mix serious, medicated ingredients with skin-soothing botanicals – which means they’re tough on breakouts, but kind to your skin.

MediBac is Dermalogica’s range targeted towards adult acne – if you have oily, breakout-prone skin and are looking to address this as an adult, this is the range for you.
Adult skin tends to experience more inflammation, leading to cysts and deeper lesions, usually around the mouth, chin and jawline. Adult acne tends to be more persistent, and the skin tends to be less resilient. Adults may also want to treat other skin concerns, such as signs of ageing, at the same time. For them, ingredients that help reduce inflammation are most important.

Hyperpigmentation has several causes – photodamage, scarring, hormonal changes and ageing are just a few. If you’re looking for a range to treat uneven skintone and pigmentary changes in the skin, PowerBright TRx is the right range for you.

Staff Favourites: 5 of the Best Dermalogica Products

“My all-time favourite eye product, Multivitamin Power Firm is super silky and glides on beautifully. It’s not cakey and is gentle on the delicate eye area. Can be used twice a day and under make-up, however I only use it at night and wake up with lovely soft skin!”

– Charley

“I love the Age Smart Skinperfect Primer SPF30 and have been through several tubes of it. It’s a great make-up base that helps my foundation stay put all day – but it also evens out my skin tone if I want to wear it on its own for weekends. I still wear a sunscreen underneath it, but I like that it has SPF so I’m not worried about applying primer and rubbing off my sunscreen.”

– Kate
“This cleanser works like magic on my oily/combination skin. It lathers up a bit but is soap-free, so it leaves my skin clean without feeling tight or stripped! Special Cleansing Gel is also really good for those big nights, where I’m using heavier make-up. I just do a double cleanse with it to get everything off. I’m also prone to break-outs, so the antiseptic properties really helps to calm down any inflammation. Plus I can use it with my Clarisonic too!! AMAZING!!”

– Kristina

“This evens out the texture of my skin and any discolouration. It also removes any dead skin (gross, I know). Daily Microfoliant is really gentle, leaving my skin feeling nice and tight!”

– Vanessa
“I use Dynamic Skin Recovery as a sunscreen and love how quickly it absorbs into my skin. You’ll find it stashed in my car for easy use on-the-go. It’s amazing how burnt or aged your skin can get when driving!”

– Melissa
