BB and CC creams are hybrid formulas that combine skincare benefits with light coverage, so you can hydrate, protect and even out your skin tone in one step rather than layering separate products. BB cream (Beauty Balm) leans toward hydration and a dewy, natural finish, while CC cream (Colour Correction) is formulated to neutralise redness, dullness and uneven tone before adding colour, with a slightly more opaque finish as a result.
Both sit somewhere between a tinted moisturiser and a traditional foundation: more coverage than the former, lighter than the latter, and generally well suited to anyone who prefers a fresh, low-maintenance base over full-coverage foundation.
Both formulas can work well on mature skin when chosen thoughtfully. Look for a version with hyaluronic acid, peptides or vitamin C, since the lightweight texture of most BB and CC creams means they're less likely to settle into fine lines than a heavier, full-coverage foundation. Jane Iredale's Glow Time BB Cream is a popular option that combines anti-ageing ingredients with buildable coverage.
If sun protection is a priority, check the SPF rating on the specific product you're considering rather than assuming all BB and CC creams offer the same level of protection. The IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream is a popular option with SPF50 built in, while other formulas are designed to be used alongside a separate sunscreen underneath.
If you have normal to dry skin and want a dewy, hydrating finish, BB cream is generally the better starting point. If redness, sallowness or uneven tone is your main concern, CC cream's colour-correcting pigments tend to give a more balanced result, and its slightly thicker texture also suits rosacea-prone or reactive skin well. Combination and oily skin types often do better with an oil-free BB formula or a mattifying CC cream, depending on the season and how much shine control you need.
Most BB and CC creams come in a more limited shade range than traditional foundation, typically around 3 to 8 shades, so match to your neck rather than your face and size down if you're between two options, since these formulas tend to sheer out more than a full-coverage base. If you'd rather a wider shade range, our global shades foundation collection may be a better fit.
