The importance of oral care

The Gem ritual

1. Brush
Brush for two minutes, getting into all those nooks and crannies. Pop on your favourite song, pick your perfect toothpaste and go to town. 
2. Floss
If you’re not already, it's time to do it daily. Seriously. Regular flossing plays an essential role in oral health, helping to remove plaque and food particles from between teeth and along the gum line, helping to reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
3. Mouthwash
Take a sip of the Gem alcohol-free mouthwash, and swish it around for a good 60 seconds. Don’t forget to rinse!
4. Whitening pen
Next, pull out your Gem Whitening Pen and swipe onto each tooth. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse. Just make sure you hold off on that coffee for a good 40 minutes.
5. Breath spray
We like to take this one with us on the go. Pop it into your handbag for post-lunch or coffee touch-ups to keep your breath feeling (and smelling) fresh. 

How is Gem different from other toothpastes?

A lot of toothpastes out there are made with questionable chemicals. Luckily, Gem is free from nasties like Titanium Dioxide, Triclosan, SLS, Parabens, Propylene Glycol, DEA, Artificial Colouring, and Animal Ingredients. Gem is also alcohol-free, and uses natural peppermint oil for that classic minty freshness. Now that's something to smile about. 

Probiotics

It's no secret that Probiotics are crucial to the health of our body. But did you know they’re also very important to the mouth?
Probiotics are good bacteria that perform certain functions depending on the strain. The probiotic in Gem is specific to the mouth, and is called Lactobacillus Lysate derived from Lactobacillus Salivarius; it specialises in maintaining a healthy oral microbiome balance.

What ingredients does Gem use?

Gem are all about transparency (which we adore). Here are some of the ingredients in their formulas:

Calcium Carbonate

This natural mineral is used as a mild abrasive to help prevent plaque build-up, remove surface stains and whiten and polish teeth, without scratching or damaging the tooth’s enamel.

Cellulose Gum

This common food additive is derived from the cell walls of plants, and acts as a thickening agent to keep the paste creamy and stop ingredients from separating. 

Glycerin

Acts as a natural preservative! Food-grade Glycerin is derived from vegetable oils and is non-GMO, helps prevent the ingredients from separating and enhances the natural mint oil flavour.

Hydrated Silica

Gem uses the highest quality, natural, ultra-fine silica to remove surface stains and whiten and polish teeth. 

Hydroxyapatite (Omyadent)

Hydroxyapatite is the main mineral our teeth and bones are made of and is a proven, safe alternative to fluoride. It helps to support harder and stronger teeth, while also smoothing and whitening the tooth’s surface

Maltodextrin

Naturally derived and made from corn, rice, potato starch or wheat, Maltodextrin is a minor by-product of the probiotic and only occurs in trace amounts in Gem products. 

Mint Oil & Menthol

These pure essential oils give Gem’s products a clean and fresh taste.

Oral Probiotic (Lactobacillus Salivarius)

This probiotic prevents the build-up of bad bacteria, encourages the good bacteria and helps to promote a healthy mouth microbiome.

Silica

Gives Gem’s toothpaste its luxuriously thick consistency. 

Sodium Menthyl Cocoyl Taurate

Derived from coconut, this naturally derived alternative to Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) has very low irritation potential (unlike SLS) and has strong cleansing properties.

Sodium Monofluorophosphate

Fluoride found in Sodium Monofluorophosphate (SM) helps reduce demineralisation of tooth enamel. This means your teeth stay stronger and for longer. 

Sorbitol

This sweetener is naturally derived from corn, and can help reduce dental plaque and acids, while also fighting harmful pathogens found in saliva. 

Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf/Stem Extract

This sugar substitute extracted from the leaves of the Stevia Rebaudiana plant, helps to remove any bitter notes in Gem’s formulas for a pleasant brushing experience. 

Water

Helps give Gem’s products the right consistency.

Xylitol

This corn-derived, sugar-free sweetener has anti-bacterial properties, helps with reducing plaque formation and inhibits enamel demineralisation. By starving the cavity-causing bacteria, acidity inside your mouth is neutralised and saliva flow increases to healthy levels.

Does gem support enamel remineralisation?

The hydroxyapatite and calcium active are specially designed for efficient enamel remineralisation. These two ingredients work together to create stronger, whiter and shinier teeth.
