Why You Need to Get This Sugar Scalp Scrub In Your Shower Immediately

Hello! My name is Amy, but my Adore Beauty colleagues call me the in-house scalp scrub aficionado.

Did I give myself that title? 100 per cent. But what I'm trying to say is I bloody love a good scalp scrub. Or three.

These days, I hardly wash my hair without one, which is why my fate was sealed the moment our haircare buyer left a new sugar scalp scrub from cult scalp care brand Sachajuan on my desk.

This hydrating and exfoliating scrub promises to soothe irritated scalps and remove product build-up, all while looking particularly delectable.

But hang on. A sugar scrub... for your... scalp?

I love me a syrupy sugar scrub for my body, but in my already oily hair? No thanks. But then I used it. Now, it's a permanent fixture in my bathroom.

Keep scrolling for my Sachajuan Scalp Scrub 250ml review, and why you really ought to get this sugar scalp scrub in your shower ASAP.

What Is A Scalp Scrub?

A scalp scrub is exactly what it sounds like: an exfoliating scrub product, for your scalp.

They usually contain non-abrasive physical exfoliation granules (think: salt, sugar, bamboo particles) or chemical exfoliation ingredients including alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic acid, and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid.

You can learn more about scalp health in this episode of Beauty IQ Uncensored the podcast below.

Do I Need A Scalp Scrub?

Technically, none of us really need any beauty products (except sunscreen, always!). But did you know the skin on your scalp is the same as the skin on your face, only oiler?

Scalp skin has more sweat glands and sebaceous (oil) glands, which means it gets dirty easily. Sometimes, this results in hair that looks and feels greasy even though you just washed it. Other times, poor scalp health and an irritated, inflamed scalp can be a trigger for hair shedding.

So just like you exfoliate your face, it's a good idea to give your scalp a scrub, too.

Introducing, the Sachajuan Scalp Scrub.

OK, back to what you came here for - a review of a ripper new scalp scrub that also happens to look very delicious, right?

Sachajuan Scalp Scrub 250ml is a weekly scalp exfoliating treatment from the same Aussie brand that brought us the best-selling Sachajuan Scalp Shampoo and Scalp Conditioner.

It's packed with shea butter oil to deeply nourish the scalp, and natural sucrose (aka sugar) to gently get rid of any excess oil, dead skin cells, grime and hair product build up. All hair types can use this scalp scrub, but it's especially great if you're prone to greasy roots and a dry, *flaky scalp.

(*Not to be confused with dandruff, which is a medical condition and should be looked at by your GP.)

So, we've already established I get around when it comes to scalp scrubs. But no joke, this one is UNBELIEVABLE... if you know how to make it work for you.

I get the best results by working a 50 cent-sized dollop of product up to a light lather in between my palms before applying on drenched hair. More water = more foam. And take the time to give yourself a decent scalp massage. Really get your fingers in there.

Rinse and consider that your first shampoo done. Next, shampoo again with your current favourite and condition as usual. This scrub leaves my scalp feeling happy, and my hair looking and feeling soft and clean, but not weighed down. Exhibit A.

Here are some other quick thoughts I have about this scalp scrub:

  • The tub is nice and big - $65 for 250ml (comparatively, the Christophe Robin scalp scrub is $69 for 250ml).

  • When you open the tub, you instantly get a whiff of its luscious shea buttery scent.

  • The texture of this scrub is also luscious. Basically, you'll wanna eat it. Don't, though. Save it for your scalp.

  • It's thick and nourishing, but not too oily. It's also grainy enough to feel like it's working, but not so grainy you'll find bits and pieces in your hair days later.

To conclude, I reckon almost everyone will love this very lush scalp scrub.

I say almost everyone because if you've got fine or thinning hair, the oily consistency might be a bit much for you. Everyone else, go forth!
