Many of us who spent their 20s swapping their sunscreen for a sunkissed glow, now know the trials and tribulations of dealing with pigmentation on the face.

The effects of sun damage, like sunspots or skin discolouration, are easy to prevent, but harder to reduce once they’ve taken effect on the skin.

How to Minimise the Appearance of Pigmentation with Natarsha from Our Customer Service Team

How Do I Get Rid of Pigmentation at Home?

For those of us who can’t rely solely on the power of prevention, there are many methods out there that can help fade pigmentation faster and rejuvenate the skin.

Natasha shares her top products for pigmentation as she walks us through how to use them in her A.M. and P.M. routines. Keep reading to see how you can do it all at home...

Tarsh's Tips to Remove Pigmentation on Your Face:

  • Don't over strip your skin with harsh chemical exfoliants or toners, and opt for a gentle exfoliant like Lactic Acid

  • You can add sun protection over your makeup look using a mineral powder with SPF.

  • Because pigmentation is so deep below the surface of the skin, there is only so much you can do to reverse it. The best method for minimising pigmentation is prevention, and that can be achieved with a good SPF. Whether you’re spending your time indoors or outdoors, using an SPF is vital to shield your skin from sun damage

Morning Skincare Routine to Reduce and Prevent Pigmentation

Step 1: Start With a Gently Exfoliating Cleanser

Step 1: Start With a Gently Exfoliating Cleanser

When dealing with pigmentation, many of us have the inclination to use harsher chemical exfoliants to really strip back the skin. This is not always the best approach, and instead we recommend using a lightly exfoliating cleanser with Lactic acid, an ingredient that hydrates as it exfoliates. The Dermalist Ultra Hydrating Lactic Cleanser 200ml is the best of both worlds, working to lightly exfoliate and contains Australian Finger Lime and Vitamin C to brighten the complexion.

Step 2: Brighten and Protect with Vitamin C

Step 2: Brighten and Protect with Vitamin C

Using a potent Vitamin C serum will not only help lift and brighten your pigmentation, but it also provides environmental and UV protection that may cause further damage. The SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF provides a powerful formula of 10% L-Ascorbic acid, Ferulic acid and Phloretin. This fast acting serum is the real deal, and just 3-4 drops should be applied directly to the skin after cleansing, avoiding the under eye area.

Step 3: Give the Skin a Boost of Vitamin B

Step 3: Give the Skin a Boost of Vitamin B

A Vitamin B serum can help with rejuvenation, anti-aging and collagen production. It also contains Vitamin B, which is an underrated pigmentation product, as it hydrates and reduces redness. We love the Alpha-H Vitamin B because it contains Copper Tripeptides, which diminish the appearance of unevenness in the skin. Apply 3-4 drops.

Step 4: The Moisturiser with the Most

Step 4: The Moisturiser with the Most

Follow up with a lightweight moisturiser like the Aspect Phytostat 9. This is a great all-rounder moisturiser that adjusts to the needs of your skin.

Step 5: Double Up on Sun Protection

Step 5: Double Up on Sun Protection

Finish you A.M. routine with a pump of the Ultra Violette Clean Screen SPF30 Skinscreen. If you feel like you need to top up your coverage throughout the day, try a mineral powder with added sun protection like the Youngblood Loose Mineral Foundation

Night Skincare Routine to Reduce and Prevent Pigmentation

Step 1: Start (again) with a Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser

Step 1: Start (again) with a Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser

Start your P.M. routine off with the Dermalist Ultra Hydrating Lactic Cleanser 200ml. You can see how much of a staple this cleanser really is, as it’s perfect for breaking down makeup at the end of a long day and hydrating the skin.

Step 2: Skip the C and Go Straight to B

Step 2: Skip the C and Go Straight to B

Another product that appears again in this routine is the Alpha-H Vitamin B. This helps soothe and hydrate the skin at night with its added Panthenol and Hyaluronic acid.

(Alternating) Step 3: Promote Cell Turnover

(Alternating) Step 3: Promote Cell Turnover

Retinol is known as one of the most powerful skincare ingredients and helps break down pigmentation by promoting cell turnover. If you’re sensitive to retinol we recommend trying the Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3, which is an advanced, but low strength formula of 0.3% suited to all skin types. Use at night and remember to always apply SPF the next day as Retinol sensitises the skin.

(Alternating) Step 3: Brighten your Skin Tone

(Alternating) Step 3: Brighten your Skin Tone

Once a week, on a night when you don’t use the Vitamin B or Retinol, try using the Alpha-H Liquid Gold to resurface and brighten your skin. You don't need to use this product with anything else, including moisturiser, for a high strength overnight facial.

Step 4: Overnight Hydration

Step 4: Overnight Hydration

You can finish up either of these routines with the Aspect Phytostat 9. This is a great moisturiser suitable for day or night packed with highly emollient ingredients.
