Dry skin occurs due to a loss of water in the skin. Dryness can be aggravated due to skin conditions, such as eczema, harsh weather, air conditioning and taking certain medications. The face is particularly susceptible to dehydration as it’s constantly exposed to the elements. As we get older, our bodies produce less oils naturally and thus our skin tends to become dryer as we age. There are certain things we can do in order to care for our skin in the best way possible and here are a few of our top suggestions.
For the face
Use a gentle cleanser cleansers that are too harsh can remove moisture from the skin and cause dryness. Instead, choose one tailored to dry skin, such as the Trilogy Cream Cleanser which contains no harsh sulfates and has rosehip oil, evening primrose, almond and carrot oils to nourish and soften the skin.
Use a good moisturiser find a creamy, intense moisturiser that will soften and sooth as well as hydrate. The Gatineau Aquamemory Moisture Replenish Cream is perfect as it moisturises deep down in the skin and protects the epidermis from external properties that may cause irritated skin.
Exfoliate exfoliating the skin will help to remove dead and dry skin cells to keep the skin looking soft and smooth. It’s best to use one that’s extra gentle without heavy exfoliating beads. The Clarins Gentle Exfoliator Brightening Toner is ideal as its light and comforting. Make sure you use a moisturiser afterwards.
Use a hydrating serum a serum is used between toner and moisturiser and can add extra hydration to your skin. Clarins HydraQuench Intensive Serum Bi-Phase is a great choice as it replenishes moisture within the skin.Drink lots of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated.
Take supplements supplements with omega 3 acids will help the body to produce natural oils, which help to keep the skin soft and smooth.
Cure dry lips with a lip balm Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Lip Balm is super nourishing and soothing to cure dry lips as well as adding a healthy shine.
For the body
Don’t spend too long in the bath or shower hot water reduces natural oils from the body. Avoid using harsh soaps, shower gels and bath products. Choose ones that are moisturising the Green People Vitamin Shower Gel is ideal as its formulated without SLES, SLS, alcohol and artificial fragrances. It contains essentials oils and vitamins A, C and E to nourish and soften dry skin and those with skin conditions, such as eczema.
Use a body moisturiser – apply a rich hydrator, such as the LOccitane Shea Ultra Rich Body Cream (which is formulated with a high concentration of shea butter), to give the body an intensely nourishing experience.
Remember to exfoliate – just like the face, the body needs exfoliation to get rid of dry and dead skin cells. Use an extra gentle exfoliator, such as the LOccitane Cleansing and Exfoliating Shower Scrub which contains almond flakes and oil to soften, hydrate and nourish.
Adapt your lifestyle – choose loose, cotton or silk clothing rather than materials that may irritate the skin. Also choose a hypo-allergenic laundry detergent. Add moisture to the air with a humidifier and avoid sitting in front of heat sources, such as an open fire.
Don’t forget your feet – they’re generally dry as they only contain sweat glands. Over exposure to the sun can also cause the feet to be dry and cracked too. It’s best to wear cotton socks in order to let feet breathe during the day. When using a foot cream go for one that’s extra nourishing, such as Burt’s Bees Coconut Foot Creme which will not only help to heal dry skin but will also purify too.
Care for your hands – use a cream that will hydrate but soak in quickly to avoid feeling greasy. The Alpha-H Age Delay Hand and Cuticle Cream contains the oils of rose, chamomile and avocado as well as vitamin E to restore hands to being soft and smooth. Wearing gloves in cold temperatures is also a good way to protect hands from harsh weather that can cause dryness.
Don’t be afraid to use a body oil – these little gems, such as the Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil, can be used on both the body and hair to repair and soften. For an overnight treatment on hands and feet, apply a little oil to feet and cover with socks. Apply to hands and wear a pair of gloves so the oil doesn’t transfer to your bedding overnight. In the morning, you’ll wake up with super soft hands and feet.
