I’m the go-to guide gal and routine queen here at Adore Beauty. I have a background in media and communications, and over 3 years experience in the beauty industry. When I’m not answering all of your burning questions, you can find me spruiking underrated products to my co-workers and trying to figure out what our best bloody mascara is.

When people I know want to start using Retinol, there is usually one product I recommend to them, and that's the Skinstitut Retinol 30ml serum.
There are some very good reasons why this is an excellent introductory vitamin A product, and we’re going to cover all of them.
After all, entering into the world of retinol and vitamin A products can be a confusing time, with so many do’s and don’ts. Not to mention the general fear that your face might peel off.
So, without further ado, here’s everything you need to know about this top rated Skinstitut product…

Firstly, What is Retinol and What is it Good For?

In short, retinol is a form of vitamin A.
When applied to the skin, retinol promotes cell renewal in the skin by increasing collagen and elastin production.
Using retinol on your skin can help to reverse, prevent, and repair the appearance of skin damage and increase elasticity in aging skin.
Retinol regulates sebaceous gland activity which makes it a great treatment for acne scarring, breakouts, pore congestion and to help fade pigmentation.
So, why choose a retinol from Skinstitut? Well, you’re about to find out...

One of the Best Beginner’s Retinol

What it is: Skinstitut Retinol 30ml is a low strength retinol with a light gel serum texture.
So, exactly how much retinol in Skinstitut? The Skinstitut Retinol percentage is 0.25%, which means that while this Skinstitut retinol strength is not super high, it is perfect for introducing your skin to retinol, which you need to do slowly and gradually.
Other Skinstitut Retinol serum ingredients include olive oil, squalene, panthenol and cantella to hydrate and soothe your skin, helping to prevent irritation.
Yep, this is likely to reduce the chances of that face peeling problem you hear about.
Why we recommend it: We recommend this retinol serum to beginners because it’s gentle, effective, and also very affordable.
It’s an easy way to experience all the best benefits of retinol and find out whether it’s for you.
How to use Skinstitut Retinol: Introducing retinol into your skincare routine can be a whole thing. If you haven't used retinol before, ease into it.
Retinol is definitely an active ingredient that can give you amazing results, but you want to make sure your skin has time to adjust.
So, start out using it once a week. From there, start using it 2-3 times a week while monitoring for a skin reaction.

Top Tips for Using Skinstitut Retinol

  • Prepare your skin properly by cleansing first with a Skinstitut cleanser.
  • Do you need to moisturise after retinol? A Skinstitut moisturiser will help ease the harshness of the retinol, so it helps to apply a hydrating moisturiser before and after use. This is called buffering.
  • Gently stroke outwards in a circular motion, gradually spreading onto the entire face, neck, and chest.
  • Avoid application in the eye area.
  • Keep the long-term goal in sight - it can take at least 3 months for results to appear.
  • Only apply at night as retinol increases your sensitivity to the sun.
  • Ensure you're wearing a Skinstitut sunscreen every day and remember that SPF is only one part of sun protection. Always seek shade, and wear sunnies, a hat and protective clothing. Use sufficient sunscreen for all unprotected areas and reapply sunscreen as directed and always read the label.

Are There Any Common Side Effects from Using Retinol?

It is normal for some sensitivity to occur and maybe even some flakey patches while your skin is still adjusting to it, but take these as signs to proceed with care, but don't give up just yet!
You also might experience what is known as purging - this is when an active ingredient triggers a mild acne breakout.
Please note: flaking and purging should stop after about three weeks. If it’s continuing after that it’s time to cut down on the retinol or investigate whether it’s something else.
