6 Aussie Makeup Artists Share the One Product They Reckon Will Change Your Life

If you want to know which makeup products are really worth your hard-earned money, ask a professional makeup artist what they use.

See, they’re not applying makeup for the fun of it. (OK, they kind of are but it’s not the only reason.) When it comes to painting clients’ faces, whether they be a celeb, bride or you or I, products have a job to do.

That job(s)? To look good on camera, withstand wind, tears or several wines, and to make someone feel spectacular.

It's for this reason you'll only find the best of the best in a makeup artist's kit.

Side note - watch Ruchi Page share exactly how to achieve a glowy AF makeup look at home in our YouTube video tutorial below!

Aside from sliding into their DMs, not everyone can go snooping around in a makeup artist's kit bag. Thankfully, we can, so we did!

We asked some of the best celebrity makeup artists and our favourite Australian makeup artists to share the one product from the Adore Beauty brands they reckon will truly change your life.

Well, as much as makeup can. Here’s what they said.

1. Merton Muaremi

A top makeup artist based in Melbourne, Muaremi (@merton_muaremi_makeup) has been in the industry for 16 years and has worked with the likes of Olympia Valance and The Veronicas to name but just two (or three). He's also amassed a casual 100K adoring Instagram followers. No biggie.

The founder of his own brush brand, Merton Muaremi Brushes, Muaremi is known for flawless, glowing skin, making him VERY popular among brides. Plus, his creative and colourful looks make us want to dive head first into our eye shadow palettes.

His favourite life-changing product?

Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Primer - GOLD

“This beauty has been in my kit for over 10 years,” he says.

“It’s the perfect base for your foundation and you really can tell the difference as your foundation applies on much smoother and it lasts. It's a must-have for any makeup lover.”

Suitable for all skin types but particularly great for dry or dehydrated skin, this primer is lightweight, soothing, and nourishing to create a perfect canvas.

2. Nicole Thompson aka Pinky

There are many ways we could introduce makeup artist Nicole Thompson (@pinkiiieee).

Top celebrity makeup artist. Queen of makeup. MAC Global Senior Makeup Artist. Author of Making It Up.

And yes, Pinky, thanks to her signature vibrant hair colour.

With an incredible body of work across runway, editorial, commercial, and on set, we’re pretty sure there’s nothing this woman can’t do with a makeup brush.

Her favourite life-changing product?

M.A.C COSMETICS Fix+ Magic Radiance

MAC Fix+ is a cult brand favourite Pinky’s been using in her kit (and on her own face!) for 15 years religiously. But it’s one of the newest versions of the product, MAC Fix+ Magic Radiance, she says trumps the rest.

“A lot of people know Fix+ as a finishing spray but that's only a quarter of what it can do! This soothing, plumping and hydrating spritz transforms the skin surface ready for makeup,” she says.

"I start EVERY SINGLE MAKEUP with five sprays and massage in. It’s the perfect balanced prep product for skin without leaving your skin feeling heavy or greasy."

Pinky says there a few ways you can use this product: Spritzing in between layers of foundation to build a flawless but not heavy base, spritzing to lock your makeup in for the day, or even spritzing directly onto your brush to amplify the shine in your highlighter or eye shadow pigment.

Her most important tip? “Don’t be shy with the spray before makeup!! SOAK your skin, massage with your hands, and thank me later!”

3. Jade Kisnorbo

Kisnorbo’s work (@jade__kmakeup) as a top makeup artist has taken her all over the world, including stops in New York, London and Paris.

Red carpets, backstage at fashion weeks, TV sets and magazine shoots - she’s done them all, working alongside Aussie and international favourites like Jessica Mauboy, Rachael Finch, Megan Gale, Elle Ferguson, Nadia Bartel, Lindsay Lohan… we could go on!

Her favourite life-changing product?

KORA Organics Noni Glow Face Oil

We all know the best makeup starts with excellent skin care.

If you’re someone who doesn’t use oils or has steered clear in the past because you have oily skin, Kisnorbo says this product will change the way you do makeup.

“This is a secret weapon in my personal and work kit. Pressing this gorgeous oil into your face prior to applying your base gives you such a radiant and flawless glow,” she says.

“I think face oils have changed the way our skin looks in such a big way and being an artist, I find this product really universal. Plus, because it’s natural and certified organic, it doesn’t irritate anyone’s skin, especially if you are sensitive.”

In terms of applying, she recommends following the rule of applying products from thinnest to thickest, so apply the oil on clean skin after cleansing, but before your moisturiser.

Kisnorbo adds, “A little trick I like to do is apply the oil pressed into foundation for a fresh, dewy glow, then add a very light layer of translucent powder to anywhere I don’t want shine!”

4. Clara Campbell

A super sharp wing and a glossy nude lip may be Campbell’s signature (@claramakeupartistry), but when you see just how crisp that liner is… well, you’ll understand why.

With over eight years experience across bridal, events and shoots, the talented makeup artist makes even the boldest looks seem totally wearable.

Her favourite life-changing product?

Jane Iredale In Touch Cream Blush

“This product is actually amazing! I’m a sucker for anything cream but this cream blush stands out from all the others in the most magical way possible,” she says.

“The texture is beautiful, soft, dewy and radiant. Often when I use this product, I use it as a duo for a blush and highlighter because the texture gives the most radiant beautiful finish."

Easy and effortless to apply, the texture means you can apply it just with your finger tips or even a dense brush for an even finish. It’s super versatile, too - Campbell’s favourite shade is Clarity, a flushed shade of pink.

“I wear this product with any makeup style, whether it’s just on top of my natural skin for some life and colour, or a full face of glam.”

5. Rosie Kalina

A visual artist, makeup artist and proud Wemba Wemba and Gunditjmara woman, Kalina’s experience spans fashion, editorial and live events (@rosiekalina).

Recently featured in Vogue Australia, her work includes ABC TV’s Warriors series, shoots for PUMA, and she was also named one of Huffington Post’s Top 10 Instagrammers of 2018.

From hand-painted skulls and gold leaf to the glossiest lids you've ever seen, Kalina’s creativity will convince you that green eye shadow is most definitely work appropriate.

Her favourite life-changing product?

M.A.C Cosmetics Prep + Prime Fix+

We told you this product was a makeup artist cult favourite for a reason!

“It’s so versatile and works on so many levels. I spray onto bare skin, pat and mix in with moisturiser before foundation to ensure a smooth application," Kalina says.

"It actually helps with dry spots for me, and I love how you can also use it as a mixing medium, combining it with eye shadow to create cream shadows and liners."

And of course, it’s also great to use to set your makeup.

“It melts powders and sets them in beautifully, not to mention makes the highlight pop even more!”

Kalina’s final tip is to spray all over your finished makeup, apply a little more highlight, then spritz again for a beautiful glowing look.

Because there is no such thing as to much glow.

6. Sarah Marie Khalil

Finally, you might recognise Khalil (@sarahmariemakeup) from a little-known television show called Gogglebox Australia… but did you know she’s a highly-talented and successful makeup artist, too?

A bridal and glam makeup specialist with over 15 years in the industry, Khalil has been named a top makeup artist by ELLE Australia and Wedded Wonderland.

Her favourite life-changing product?

ICONIC London Illuminator

“It’s an absolute lifesaver on dry skin or when you need a healthy ‘pick-me-up’ look,” she says.

Her go-to shade is Translucent Tan Gold but trust us, all the shades are seriously versatile.

“It’s hard to find a product with a glow finish rather than a sparkle finish. This gives a more youthful look to the skin, and who doesn’t love that!?”

Khalil recommends adding a touch on the cheek bones with a soft brush or your fingers after you’ve finished your makeup, or even adding a drop in your foundation - ideally a more matte foundation - for a dewy, creamier finish.
