One of the most common questions we get asked here at Adore Beauty is how to keep hair healthy, despite using heated stylers, like curling wands and straighteners. So Melissa approached ghd Education Manager, Robert Kovacs, for some secret hairdresser tips!
How to use ghd Heat Protect Spray
1. SHOULD I USE A HEAT PROTECT SPRAY?
“Correct heat protect is my top recommendation. Apply some ghd Heat Protect Spray from the roots to the ends of your hair before styling, each time you curl or straighten. Heat protectors add moisture and strength, and help protect hair from pollutants. If the styling tool exceeds 220 degrees, Heat Protect will shield the hair (which is naturally under 220 degrees!) from drying out and getting damaged. Heat protectors are like a moisturiser for your skin – they seal, restore and protect. Without one, you risk removing the hair’s natural 10 – 15 per cent moisture content.”
2. WHAT STYLING PRODUCT SHOULD I USE BEFORE USING A HEAT STYLING TOOL?
“Never use hairspray as a styling product before drying or heat styling. Hairspray has a high alcohol content, which is designed for quick-drying. Using this as a styling agent, with a heat-styling tool such as a styler, dryer, wand or tong will accelerate moisture loss and may create prolonged damage. We recommend a styling product such as ghd Total Volume Foam or ghd Curl Hold Spray instead, as they have moisturising agents that will help dry and also protect your hair during the taxing styling process, which can dehydrate hair.”
ghd flat iron tips
3. HOW FAST SHOULD I RUN THE STYLING TOOL DOWN MY HAIR?
“When using a ghd flat iron always run the styler with consistent speed down the hair. This will allow only minimal contact in one spot on the hair strand, therefore limiting the heat’s effect on the hair and reducing possible causes of damage. It’s the best technique for healthy, shiny hair and a long-lasting style.”
4. HOW LONG SHOULD THE STYLING TOOL REMAIN ON MY HAIR?
“All heating tools should only remain on the hair, in one spot, for no more than 5- 8 seconds. If you use your ghd on the hair daily, rest assured that it’s been set at 175 – 185 degrees, which has been proven to be the safest temperature at which to style your hair.”
