3 Reasons To Try A CBD Lip Balm

Before I start telling you how awesome this CBD lip balm is, let’s address the marijuana leaf-shaped elephant in the room - no, it won’t get you high.

There is a big difference between the CBD or “cannabis” used in beauty products and the stuff used, erm, recreationally.

The cannabis sativa plant contains around 500 cannabinoids, or naturally occurring chemicals. In the leaves and flowers of the plant, you’ll find the two most popular chemicals - cannabidiol (CBD oil) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC or marijuana/recreational cannabis).

THC is the stuff that gets you high - and it’s completely banned.

But CBD is legal in Australia, so whenever you see a beauty product that contains CBD, or its full name cannabidiol, you can be rest assured that it doesn’t contain THC, is absolutely legal and has no psychoactive effects.

It’s important to note that CBD oil is completely different to hemp seed oil. While CBD comes from the leaves and flowers of the marijuana plant, hemp seed oil comes from the seeds and does not contain any of the medicinal nor psychoactive properties of CBD and THC. To ensure you’re truly getting skincare containing CBD, look for “cannabidiol” on the ingredient list.

What Does CBD Do On Your Skin?

CBD oil is extremely calming and hydrating, so when beauty brands use CBD in skincare, these products can help soothe inflamed skin and conditions including eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, acne and other skin reactions.

CBD is also packed full of antioxidants, so it can protect the skin against free radical damage, the environment, pollution and the harmful effects of the sun.

That makes it the perfect ingredient to include in a lip balm, because our lips need constant protection and hydration against the elements, particularly in winter.

Colder temperatures and increased wind levels lead to dry chapped lips. And of course this means we automatically lick our lips more in an attempt to keep them moist, which actually makes the problem worse.

As our saliva evaporates in the cold air, it draws moisture away from the lips. This makes them more vulnerable to the dry winter air and cold winds.

That’s why using a hydrating lip product every day, especially in winter, is so important.

Here's My Pick:

Vegan and cruelty-free American beauty brand Smith & Cult - yes, the same people behind those very chic “clean” nail polishes - have created a glorious luxe CBD-infused lip product that will win over even the biggest CBD sceptics.

The Smith & Cult Locked & Lit CBD Lip Balm is a super hydrating vegan product that hydrates and soothes dry lips, plus it has a lovely buttery finish that leaves a lovely glowy sheen.

It provides intense hydration without being sticky or tacky - and it doesn’t get stuck to your flyaways.

I love this lip balm because it can serve the purpose of a nourishing nighttime lip mask that you apply before bed, as well as a super glam lip gloss for day or night.

And when you take a look at the ingredients list, it makes sense why this lip balm feels so hydrating and nourishing...

Real cannabidiol (CBD): If you look carefully at the ingredients of this lip balm, you’ll find “cannabidiol” listed - the full name for CBD

Coconut-derived MCT oil: MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides oil, a type of fatty supplement that’s great for soothing and hydration

Apple seed oil: This ingredient is rich in Vitamins A, E, & fatty acids, to helpmaintain smooth, supple lips. It also gives the lil balm a subtle fresh, apple scent

Still need a little more convincing to jump on board the CBD train? Here are three reasons why you should try this lip balm:

1. It’s vegan

It can be really hard for vegans to find a good lip balm, because many popular hydrating ingredients such as lanolin or beeswax, which is used by iconic brands like Lanolips, are animal by-products and therefore not vegan.

So if you’ve been struggling to find a cruelty-free lip balm that is actually chic - this is a good one to try.

2. It’s gluten-free

They say we consume about 42g of lipstick and lip products a year, or a few kilos in an entire lifetime. If you are super sensitive to gluten or have coeliac disease, choosing a gluten-free lip balm might be a good option for you to avoid any gut issues.

3. It comes in four gorgeous shades

These cute little pots of joy come in four colours - Clear, Glassy Rose, Glassy Berry and Glassy Pink.

Don’t be afraid of the green colouring in the clear balm. You only need a tiny bit and it definitely does not look green on the lips!

The other shades are very sheer, wearable and natural. They’re perfect for when you just want to add a hint of colour - think your own lip shade, but better!
