What Is Olaplex?

Olaplex is a three-part hair treatment designed drastically minimise breakage during lightening, colouring and chemical processes. Olaplex increases hair elasticity and restores the hair’s condition to its natural texture to improve manageability and make your colour last longer.

The first two steps of Olaplex are performed in-salon only, while Olaplex No. 3 Take Home Hair Perfector is your at-home maintenance product. It contains the same active ingredient as the professional Olaplex service so you can repair and maintain strong, healthy hair at home.

Note: You don’t have to have had Olaplex performed in-salon to use No. 3 at home – it’s suitable for all hair types.

Vanessa’s Hair Transformation:

Vanessa is our resident makeup artist and has been using Olaplex No. 3 for 3 weeks now, so I asked her to document her experience for us so we could find out how good Olaplex really is…

About Vanessa’s Hair:

My natural hair (before colouring it) is very dark brown and has a slight 80’s wave. The texture is fine but there was a lot of it, and it was naturally quite soft and silky. Then I started bleaching it…

After Bleaching

When I decided to lighten my hair from very dark brown to platinum blonde last year, I knew I’d need to find a salon that offered Olaplex – so that’s what I did.

As the colourist worked her magic, she used Olaplex No. 1 Bond Multiplier &  No. 2 Bond Perfector and then gave me  No. 3 Hair Perfector to take home.

Initially, the No. 3 Hair Perfector kept my hair looking fresh and healthy, even though it had been bleached from brown to silver in two sittings. But when I ran out of the treatment, I just used a regular hair mask, and noticed the condition of my hair was quickly deteriorating.

I went several months without using No. 3, which was evident in the state of my hair. It felt very dry, knotty and my colour wasn’t lasting very well.

Thankfully, Adore Beauty started stocking Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector online, so as soon as it landed in stock, I purchased a bottle.

Week 1:

After using the treatment for the first time since last year, I’d forgotten how good it really is. As soon as I got home, I washed my hair and left No. 3 in my hair overnight (which might have been a little excessive). After the first use, I noticed the condition of my hair was instantly better – a lot softer and I could run my hands through my hair, without my fingers getting stuck in a knot!

Week 2:

With continued use, my hair was improving more and more. It was particularly more manageable with less frizz, and felt healthier to touch.

Week 3:

Within the past three weeks I’ve used the treatment four times, and still have about half a bottle left. Though the bottle appears small, you only need a small amount (about the size of a 50 cent coin). I recommend brushing it through your hair very gently with a wide tooth comb brush and leaving it in for 10 minutes to 2 hours, then wash the product out and lightly towel dry.

Vanessa’s Verdict:

I’m really happy with the results of using Olaplex. My hair is definitely healthier, more manageable, and even my colour looks fresher (even though it hasn’t been coloured since prior to using Olaplex). I’d definitely recommend this treatment for anyone with coloured or damaged hair. Investing in a treatment like Olaplex can make a huge difference in maintaining the condition of your hair between treatments.
