Anyone else reentering their lip gloss era?

Welcome, it’s been a minute. But boy, are our lips in for a treat.

Far from the sticky, sickly-sweet iterations synonymous with the ‘90s and noughties, today’s iterations are enriched with skin-loving ingredients that offer more than just a pretty sheen.

Like the Maybelline Lifter Gloss – infused with moisture-boosting hyaluronic acid.

It’s been a staple in makeup kits for quite some time now, but somehow it managed to slip under my radar until just recently when its new spicy sister landed on my desk.

Admittedly, I’m a bit late to the party on this one. While it was busy skyrocketing to social stardom, apparently I was living under a rock.

But I’m pleased to share that my thin lips and I have *finally* tried it. Now, we totally get it.

Scroll on for everything you need to know about the Maybelline pout-plumpers plus my top shade picks.

If you too have been sleeping on this cult lip product, allow me to bring you up to speed.

The Maybelline Lifter Gloss Plumping Lip Gloss is exactly what its name suggests: a lip gloss designed to ‘lift’ your lips to help them appear fuller and smoother with every swipe.

Since its debut in 2020, the plumping gloss has quickly become a cult classic.

It’s even been compared to some of the most coveted high-end glosses retailing more than two times the price.

Without naming names, let’s just say one very popular celebrity beauty brand in particular comes to mind… IYKYK.

With an average rating of 4.6 stars from nearly 13 thousand customer reviews across the web, it's clear that this gloss has earned its place as a beauty Hall of Famer.

What else is there to know about the Maybelline Lifter Gloss?

Here are some other fast facts:

  • Delivers instant heat that lasts for around an hour.

  • Provides a plumping effect instantly and over time.

  • Smooths lip lines and plumps the lips with a glossy finish.

As someone with naturally thin lips, I'm always on the lookout for products that can give my pout a little extra oomph without going under the needle.

Let’s start with the OG Maybelline Lifter Gloss with hyaluronic acid.

While I wouldn’t go as far as to say it delivered significant volume, it did make my lips look hella juicy which gave them a nice little boost.

Its generous applicator is the perfect size for a single-swipe application, depositing a thick, pigmented pop of colour on my lips with ease.

Normally, I'd apply lip balm before adding colour or gloss.

But for research's sake, with the Maybelline Lifter Gloss I didn’t and was surprised to find I survived an evening out without digging into my handbag for a soothing salve.

My only complaint is that the colour does transfer, so top-ups are essential.

Out of the generous and frankly overwhelming selection of 14 stunning shades on Adore Beauty to choose from, I managed to narrow it down to just two:

  • Moon: an iridescent nude pink that adds a pearlescent touch to your pout.

  • Petal: a warm, natural-looking pink with a glossy, pigmented finish.

As soon as they arrived at my door the next day (humble brag), I wasted no time in swatch testing them – which you can watch in the video below.

I’m going to go ahead and pat myself on the back for slaying this blind order.

Moon is the perfect shade to add a pop of shimmer to both no-makeup makeup and full-glam looks, on its own or layered on top of neutral lip liner colours.

Petal, on the other hand, is more pigmented with a rosy pink finish that’s ideal for dinner or date plans. The perfect your-lips-but-better shade that also looks really cute paired with a neutral or brown liner.

Both lip glosses delivered on their promise of fuller, smoother-looking lips, with a non-sticky texture and high shine finish that’s seriously addictive.

Consider me converted.

OK, now onto its spicy sister, Maybelline New York Lifter Plump.

Unlike the OG, this one definitely delivered on the volume front.

It’s quite zingy, like that feeling you get after eating a spicy bowl of ramen, but it subsides over time and isn’t significant enough to turn me off using it.

And that’s coming from someone who typically orders “just a little bit” of chilli in her bahn mi.

I picked up Peach Fever, a gorgeous coral-pink shade that’s perfect for everyday wear.

It’s just as creamy, shiny and comfortable on the lips as the OG, with an added kick.

A must-have for anyone looking for products to plump their lips and don’t mind a little bit of spice. But if you do, I’d suggest sticking to the original hyaluronic acid-infused formula.

Adore Beauty Marketing Coordinator Laura is also a big fan of the Maybelline plumping glosses.

She shared her thoughts and feelings with me below:

"The Maybelline Lifter Gloss has been my go-to lip gloss since I first tried it a few months ago and I've been through about three tubes of 'Moon' since then!

As a long-time lover of any spicy gloss, when I saw they were releasing the Maybelline Lifter Plump I was verrry keen to get my mitts and lips on it. Let me tell you it did NOT disappoint.

Not only do you get the beautiful smooth gloss of the OG and all those lovely shades, but boy does she pack a punch!

The chilli in it leaves you lips tingling for a long time and you can see the plumping effect after a few seconds. I have shade 005 Peach Fever and It's my go-to nude shade for daily wear.

Whether you want to use it as a pre-lippy plumper or as your gloss and plump in one go, for this price point I couldn't recommend it more." - Laura.
