Runway hair trends are meant to be aspirational.
They often forecast and set the tone for styles we can look to for inspiration when we style our own hair.
This year, our Senior Editor Amy and I were lucky enough to attend Afterpay Australian Fashion Week with professional haircare brand Redken.
This meant going backstage at some of the shows to take a peek at the beauty looks and popular hairstyles created by Redken hair directors Diane Gorgievski and Richard Kavanagh.
In between being pampered and getting our hair and makeup done (it's a hard job, we know), we did our due diligence and took notes on all the winter 2022 hair trends.
More importantly, we asked the experts how to replicate them in a wearable way for everyday life.
Keep scrolling for three 2022 hair trends we spotted at Fashion Week, and exactly how to do them at home.
Trend 1. Grungy Lived-In Waves.
The 2022 hair trend:
Lived-in and textured waves were featured in the Bec & Bridge show, which was all about ‘90s grunge.
Redken Hair Director Diane Gorgievski took inspiration from popular TV show Euphoria to create the looks, which had a sexy, sweaty and 'youthful glamour' vibe.
Diane says this look was inspired by "the modern girl who is living her best life after lockdown!”
Want to try this look at home?
If the sexy, sweaty, cool fashion runway look is not your vibe, you can still replicate the ‘90s grunge hair moment in a real life way.
Just like the Redken team did with Senior Editor Amy on the night…
To get this look, try the Redken Quick Blow Out 125ml for texture and volume, then using a straightener, curl the hair holding the tongs vertically for a more lived-in wave than a tight curl.
Follow up with a hair clay to scrunch up the waves. Yep, hair clay isn't just for short hair!
Redken Brews Outplay Texture Pomade 100ml or Redken Rough Paste 12 Texturizing Hair Paste are perfect for this.
A bit of the Redken Shine Flash 150ml spray finishes the look. *Chef's kiss*
Trend 2. High-Shine Gloss.
The 2022 hair trend:
The ‘wet look’ trend was another style we saw quite a lot across a few different shows.
Hair director Richard Kavanagh used three Redken products to achieve directional, runway-ready, glossy up-dos and sleek looks for the Daniel Avakian runway.
"First, you need to build the foundation and fabric of the hair, for this use Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam to lift roots and provide all-over volume."
"Follow this with Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Hairspray 278g as this will hold the shape and texture of the wet look, and finish with Redken Shine Flash 150ml for extra gloss.”
Diane also created high-shine and glossy waves for the Hansen & Gretel show below.
