5 Adore Beauties With Different Hair Types Tried Our New (Affordable) Salon Haircare Brand

NAK hair review NAK hair review

When the news NAK Hair was coming to Adore Beauty first began circulating around our virtual office, to say we were all keen would be an epic understatement.

Not naming names, but someone may or may not have weed a little when they heard about how none of the NAK products cost more than $32.

Already, the affordable salon-quality brand is flying off our metaphorical shelves like hand sanitiser in a pandemic (too soon?), and it's not hard to see why.

There's a lot to love about NAK before you've even had the chance to peel off the silver product seal. For example:

  • NAK is Aussie-owned and made.

  • The brand specialises in beautiful hair care for everyone = salon-quality products at affordable prices.

  • Products start at $14.95, bloody bargain!

  • NAK is a vegan haircare brand - they're also cruelty-free and don't test on animals.

  • All NAK hair products are sulphate and paraben-free.

That's all lovely, but when a new product or brand launches, you want to hear the God honest truth and real reviews from people who've actually tried it, right?

It's for this reason I asked five of my colleagues with different hair types to put their manes on the line in order to road test some of NAK's best-selling products.

Enough chat, here's what they thought.

1. NAK Hair Structure Complex No. 3 Bond Enhancer.

Who: Hannah, Brand & Content Manager.

Hair type: Hagrid aka frizzy and coarse (disclaimer: I've recently had a keratin treatment, you can read about it here!).

Product pick: NAK Hair Structure Complex No.3 Bond Enhancer 150ml

Why she loves it:

Being a Hagrid hair girl, I am VERY fussy about my masks. I want instant results, long-term repair and a yummy smell. Is that too much to ask? Apparently not, because this mask ticks all three boxes.

Without getting too science-y, the NAK Hair Structure Complex No.3 Bond Enhancer 150ml will repair your hair from the inside out by rebuilding the bonds in your strands. What's great about this mask is it also contains watermelon seed, hazel seed and coconut oils so your hair will feel instantly hydrated and shiny, too.

Everyone at Adore is raving about the NAK scent and I can confirm... it smells divine. Plus, the packaging is pretty cute.

Someone wrote this review on the product page and I think it sums it up perfectly: "Probably the best smelling hair product I've used".

2. NAK Hair Root Lift Mist.

Who: Karin, Copywriter.

Hair type: Fine, thinning, flat hair.

Product pick: NAK Hair Root Lift Mist 250ml

Why she loves it:

I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert in products for fine hair because mine is the finest. I've also tried just about everything that has the words 'volumising', 'densifying' or 'root lift' on the bottle.

If you've got hair flatter than flat pack furniture like mine, the NAK Hair Root Lift Mist 250ml can really help. It's a deliciously-scented volumising spray that'll give even the limpest of hair some serious va va voom vibes.

Don't believe me? Suss my great hair day in the photos below.

A small but very important detail - the product's spray distribution is really wide and feels super light, which means you get a nice even spritz across the roots. And the pear and coconut fragrance makes you feel like you could be sipping a cocktail at a beach somewhere warm.

The texture and finish actually surprised me - it's a little on the sticky side, but that's what makes your volume hold. This product is best sprayed onto towel-dried hair at the roots before blow drying. Add a round brush for extra Real Housewives of Dallas volume.

3. NAK Hair Structure Complex Protein Shampoo and Conditioner.

Who: Elena, Assistant Marketing Manager for Hair, Makeup and Fragrance.

Hair type: Dry, damaged goods.

Product picks:

Why she loves them:

I always thought I was a low-maintenance gal when it came to hair care. Turns out, I'm not. I'm picky. Given I only wash my hair twice a week, I like to ensure my hair is left feeling and smelling fresh AF for at least three days after washing. Enter, NAK Hair.

Hands down, the NAK Hair Structure Complex Protein Shampoo 375ml and NAK Hair Structure Complex Protein Conditioner 375ml is the best smelling hair duo I have EVER used and experienced in my life. It's like summer in a bottle. The uplifting fragrance transports me to a salon-like experience, and gee it feels good.

The shampoo lathers up to the perfect amount of suds, so it feels like it's doing a good job cleansing my scalp and roots. The conditioner boosts hydration and leaves my hair feeling strong and restored.

After a few washes with this couple, my hair looked shinier, was noticeably less frizzy, and felt healthier overall. I highly recommend this duo for hair that needs a little extra TLC.

4. NAK Hair Ultimate Treatment 60 Second Repair Mask.

Who: Amy, Senior Editor.

Hair type: Fine, but lots of it. Greasy roots, parched ends.

Product pick: NAK Hair Ultimate Treatment - 60 Second Repair 150ml

Why I love it:

Hair masks have never been for me. Who has five, six, seven minutes to stand in the shower - unless you’re hungover - waiting for one to do its job? But 60 seconds? I can do that.

This hydrating protein mask is basically a really hardworking conditioner that leaves my hair seriously soft, shiny, strong and snag-free. It performs this wizardry with argan oil, coconut oil, hydrolysed rice protein and baobab seed extract, among other things.

But let's not be superficial here - this mask is deep. Protein helps repair the bonds in your hair and smooth out the surface layer (your hair cuticles) for swishy TV commercial hair as seen above.

I've been using this once a week in place of my conditioner. Waiting that 60 seconds for it to do its thing gives me an excuse to quickly tick off a boring shower task like exfoliating the backs of my arms or shaving my pits. Win!

5. NAK Platinum Blonde Anti-Yellow Shampoo.

Who: Millie, Customer Service Advisor.

Hair type: Fine, wavy hair lightened from mid-lengths to ends aka not a real blonde.

Product pick: NAK Hair Platinum Blonde Anti-Yellow Shampoo 375ml

Why she loves it:

I’ve used many a toning product in my time, both as a hair stylist in salon and through my extensive 'product research' here at Adore (i.e. making the most of my staff discount). The NAK Hair Platinum Blonde Anti-Yellow Shampoo 375ml is honestly one of the best.

I’m forever hunting for the best product to help me get my dream hair - Elsa from Frozen blonde - and can spot a brassy tone from a mile away, so I was blown away by the results.

NAK Platinum Blonde Anti-Yellow Shampoo - Millie NAK Platinum Blonde Anti-Yellow Shampoo - Millie

This purple shampoo is SUPER pigmented and tells any unwanted warm/brassy tones to rack off. Be warned, it can stain your hands (and light coloured bathroom tiles) so make sure you wash off any splashes as you're using the product in the shower. You can always wear gloves, too.

All purple shampoos are drying on the hair, so I'd recommend using this product every few washes rather than every time you wash your hair. I have darker/natural roots, so will be rotating it with my usual oil control shampoo, or even a protein strengthening shampoo.

You can also just save it for the occasional wash when your brassiness is bothering you and you feel like you need a spruce. And yep, it smells AMAZING. So fresh and awakening, it could almost replace my morning caffeine hit.
