Gender-Neutral Fragrances Are the Next Big Thing. Here’s 6 to Have On Your Radar

Before I say anything else, I want to state the obvious: any fragrance is a genderless fragrance if you want it to be.

As we know, gender is nothing more than a social construct, so if you identify as a dude who loves rose scents, that’s fantastic. (Also, may I recommend you try Jo Loves White Rose & Lemon Leaves – it is truly special.)

You can be a gal with a penchant for traditional men’s colognes, or a non-binary human who exclusively shops femme or homme – perfume is perfume, so ignore the labels and choose whatever you love.

That said, the fact there are still femme and homme categories tells us that Big Perfume still believes these classifications to be somewhat useful in terms of generalising what women/men like.

Thankfully there is also a new and growing family of fragrances referred to as ‘gender-neutral’ or ‘unisex’.

These tend to fall somewhere between feminine and masculine.

More and more brands are choosing to ditch labels in favour of simply making scents that smell good and marketing them to everyone.

(It’s also worth mentioning that sharing a scent with your partner makes financial sense in this economy!)

We’ve seen such a huge rise in genderless fragrances of late that even heritage fragrance houses are looking to keep up by launching scents that straddle the stereotypical definitions of femme/homme.

So if you're on the hunt for a unisex perfume, here's a round-up of 6 gender-neutral fragrances I reckon you should have on your radar.

1. Yves Saint Laurent MYSLF.

Yves Saint Laurent MYSLF Yves Saint Laurent MYSLF

What: Yves Saint Laurent MYSLF 100ml

Notes:

Head: Calabrian bergamot, green bergamot.

Heart: Tunisian orange blossom.

Base: Ambrofix™, patchouli.

My YSL MYSLF Mini-Review:

  • While designed as a celebration of modern masculinity, it wears well on everyone else too.

  • A nod to traditional colognes, the citrusy bergamot is layered over sweet orange blossom.

  • Perhaps best described as a woody floral, it’s vibrant but has a depth that feels elegant.

  • The patchouli heart is melded with Ambrofix™, a synthetic note that smells like tobacco.

  • The sleek black bottle is lacquered (chic) and has a huge YSL logo embedded in the glass.

  • The bottle is also refillable! Yay for supporting our beautiful environment in any way we can.

What: who is elijah HAZE 100ML

Notes:

Head: Pink pepper, orange blossom, clove.

Heart: Chestnut, guaiac wood, juniper.

Base: Vanilla, Peru balsam, Cashmeran, cedarwood.

My Who Is Elijah Haze Mini-Review:

  • Billed as a smoky-but-sweet woody aromatic fragrance for women and men.

  • Unlike a typical gourmand, it’s sweet but also has a dry and crisp quality.

  • A powdery softness adds a touch of sophistication to its overall character.

  • Long-lasting – I find it lingers on my skin all day, so no touch-ups needed.

  • The vanilla note feels really grown-up – this isn’t a kiddie dessert-y scent.

  • It layers well. Worn underneath a citrus-y scent, the wood notes really sing.

3. HERMETICA Sandalsun.

What: HERMETICA Sandalsun EDP

Notes:

Heart: Hazelnut, vanilla, bergamot, cocoa, myrrh, sandalwood.

My Hermetica Sandalsun Mini-Review:

  • The formula uses patented tech to immediately reveal the heart notes – no head or base notes here.

  • Completely alcohol-free, it might be a less irritating option for those with sensitive skin.

  • Inspired by a lazy day spent in the sun, it evokes the warmth of sun-kissed skin.

  • A delightful combination of nuttiness and sweetness, it marries pure vanilla with a hazelnut accord.

  • As the fragrance develops, it reveals woody and gourmand notes, adding depth and complexity.

  • The brand is eco-conscious, and each bottle is crafted from 100% recycled glass and sand.

4. Lumira Parfum Cuban Tobacco.

What: Lumira Parfum Cuban Tobacco

Notes:

Head: Tangerine, cardamom, clove bud.

Heart: Clean floral.

Base: Mahogany, patchouli, musk, vanilla, tobacco.

My Lumira Cuban Tobacco Mini-Review:

  • An olfactory journey to the vibrant streets of Old Havana – it’s seriously transportive.

  • You’ll pick up fragrant cigar smoke and rich spices cut with freshly-cut, bright blooms.

  • Complex and captivating, it strikes a perfect balance between smoky, sweet and herbal.

  • Perfect for day or night, it’s intoxicating but not so potent that it’d be distracting at work.

  • Specifically made to transcend gender norms, it smells intriguing and inviting on everyone.

  • If you love it, you’ll be delighted to learn that you can also get it in candle and oil formats.

5. Oribe Desertland Eau de Parfum.

What: Oribe Desertland Eau de Parfum 75 mL

Head: Juniper berry, fresh lavender, sunstruck pine.

Heart: Desert wildflowers, angelica root.

Base: Texas cedarwood, vetiver, sandalwood.

My Oribe Desertland Mini-Review:

  • Summer in a bottle: a luxurious scent that’s ideal for sun-drenched days and sultry evenings.

  • It captures the vibes of tranquil days spent lounging around by the water and sipping gin.

  • Crisp and invigorating, the juniper berry, lavender and wildflowers paint a picture of serenity.

  • The wood notes and vetiver (a grass that also smells woody) give it a rich, grounded base.

  • Hard to explain, but it smells rich. I can visualise the entire Roy family wearing this one.

  • Dermatologist-tested and free from sulphates and parabens – might be an option for sensitive types.

6. Juliette Has A Gun Ego Stratis.

What: Juliette Has A Gun Ego Stratis EDP 50ml

Notes:

Head: Bergamot, mandarin, lemon.

Heart: Neroli, calone, blueberry.

Base: Cedar, ambroxan, musks.

My Juliette Has a Gun Ego Stratis Mini-Review:

  • A marine fragrance that challenges the norms of what aquatics can be (usually fresh, clean.)

  • It has the classic zesty citrus and neroli notes but also sweet blueberry and soft ambroxan.

  • A modern riff on ‘90s unisex scents, it has a youthful spirit and a bright, energetic feeling.

  • Colone, a synthetic note, recreates the light, airy fragrance of syrupy watermelon.

  • Juliette Has A Gun is a great brand for those seeking genderless scents – they’re all playful.

  • For a confident individual who doesn’t like to smell like everyone else. A perfect signature.
