Body oil, where have you been all my life?

One of the banes of winter has surely got to be keeping your skin hydrated when all you want to do is make sure there is as little time as possible between showering and getting dressed.

Recently, I stumbled across a short-cut. Curious about the French’s love affair with body oils, I decided to try it out for myself. Expecting to be left feeling slimy and having to wait for it to absorb so as not to stain my clothes, the opposite was in fact true. My skin drank up the lubrication like it hadn’t been moisturised for weeks (this may or may not be true) and not only was I able to get dressed right away, I smelt gorgeous, too!

Kim Fredericks from Elemis explains what makes oils different to creams or gels.

“Oils, like our Frangipani Monoi, are absorbed directly and quickly into the deeper layers of the epidermis. They provide instant moisture to the skin and show results straight away.”

Emilie Mouline from Nuxe agrees, saying the secret is in oil’s rich fatty acids.

“Our Huile Prodigieuse contains a cocktail of six precious plant oils (borage, St John’s Wort, sweet almond, camellia, hazelnut and macadamia), as well as vitamin E. It has esters that ensure a dry, non-greasy finish, rather than the silicones most other moisturisers possess.”

With one sold every six seconds, clearly this oil is doing something right. Using just a single product, you can effectively moisturise body, face and even hair. Plus it’s spray-on – talk about time-saving!

Keeping with the French theme, L’Occitane also have a body oil to melt your heart. With a sleek, ergonomic design and botanical fragrance, their Fabulous Oil for Body and Hair lives up to its name. There is a high concentration of shea, to give the skin suppleness and hydration – no wonder this ingredient is known as ‘life’ in the Dioula language of west Africa!

In only a few days, my skin feels nourished and I actually look forward to hopping out of shower. However it’s not simply post-bathing that dry oils can be used.

“On the face, a few drops can be mixed with foundation for a pretty glow,” Mouline recommends. “It can be sprayed directly onto a hairbrush to control frizz or even applied as an overnight mask. The oil is also great for a silk-stocking effect on the legs!”

So, head on over here now. It’ll be love at first slick.
