Why Everyone's Talking About Lymphatic Drainage Right Now

She spends most of her time crafting scroll-stopping content, but outside of work, you'll find her building on her Glasshouse collection, hanging out with her fur babies and probably cleaning. Her all-time favourite products include the Alpha-H Liquid Gold and Kérastase Elixir Ultime Original Hair Oil.

If you're reading this, chances are you've heard of lymphatic drainage. Maybe you've seen models or influencers getting specialised sculpting massages with those wooden Y-shaped tools, or rollers gliding over skin, all promising a more lifted, more toned appearance.

Is lymphatic drainage massage worth it?
Unlike many viral beauty trends that disappear as quickly as they arrive, lymphatic drainage has had surprising staying power. It seems to resurface every few months, sparking fresh conversations across social media, wellness circles and beauty communities. The more I looked into it, the more I realised this wasn't just another fleeting trend; there seemed to be genuine benefits and a growing body of interest behind it.
Naturally, I wanted to learn more.
That's what led me to discover BIOTYSPA, a body care brand dedicated to transforming everyday routines into meaningful self-care rituals, with a particular focus on the power of lymphatic drainage and intentional body care.

Who are BIOTYSPA?

Having lived with psoriasis for much of her life, founder Deborah Levy became interested in creating body and skincare rituals that worked in harmony with the skin rather than overwhelming it.This was the birth of BIOTYSPA.
Inspired by French holistic beauty techniques, she went on to develop sculpting lymphatic drainage rituals for both the face and body, before creating a range of skincare products and bespoke massage tools designed specifically to support these techniques.
Because lymphatic massage focuses on supporting the body's natural processes, BIOTYSPA's formulations are intentionally free from unnecessary ingredients, with a focus on products that complement and enhance massage rituals.
Amidst Melbourne’s lockdowns, Deborah wanted clients to continue experiencing the benefits of BIOTYSPA treatments from home. The result was a collection of DIY spa kits, skincare and massage tools designed to recreate the brand's signature lymphatic drainage techniques outside of the treatment room.
Today, BIOTYSPA's philosophy centres around beauty as a ritual, encouraging people to slow down, reconnect with themselves and transform everyday body care into a meaningful moment of self-care.
Intrigued? So was I.
Naturally, we couldn't stop there, we had to dig deeper and ask founder Deborah Levy some burning questions.

Everyone's talking about lymphatic drainage right now - what actually is it?
DL: Lymphatic drainage is a gentle massage technique designed to support the body’s lymphatic system, which is responsible for moving excess fluid, cellular waste and toxins away from tissues and back into circulation to be eliminated. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump like the heart, so it relies on movement, breathing and manual stimulation to keep fluid flowing efficiently.
At Biotyspa, we see lymphatic drainage as a powerful way to support the body’s natural detoxification processes while encouraging a feeling of lightness, vitality and wellbeing.
What results can you expect from lymphatic drainage?
DL: Many people notice an immediate reduction in puffiness and water retention, particularly around the face, stomach and legs. Skin can appear more toned and radiant, and many report feeling lighter, less sluggish and more energised after incorporating lymphatic stimulation into their routine.
While professional treatments can be beneficial, it’s absolutely possible to support the lymphatic system effectively at home with the right tools and consistency. In fact, I believe regular DIY lymphatic care is one of the most accessible and sustainable ways to maintain results between treatments or even as a standalone practice.
Over time, consistent lymphatic stimulation may help improve circulation, reduce feelings of bloating, support recovery after travel or periods of inactivity, and contribute to smoother-looking, more sculpted skin. It’s important to remember that lymphatic drainage isn’t a quick fix or a substitute for healthy lifestyle habits, but rather a powerful wellness ritual that supports the body’s natural detoxification processes.

Who would benefit most from adding lymphatic drainage to their routine?
DL: Almost anyone can benefit from supporting their lymphatic system, whether male or female.
Lymphatic drainage can be particularly helpful for those experiencing fluid retention, bloating, puffiness, sedentary lifestyles, frequent travel, high stress levels, or anyone looking to support skin health, body contouring efforts and overall wellbeing.
That said, women often tend to benefit from more regular lymphatic support than men.
Hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause can contribute to increased water retention, swelling and feelings of heaviness. As a result, many women naturally hold onto more fluid and may notice more pronounced changes in their body from day to day or week to week.
This is why I encourage women to think of lymphatic drainage as an ongoing wellness practice rather than an occasional treatment. Regular stimulation of the lymphatic system—whether through massage, movement or dedicated lymphatic tools—can help manage fluid retention, reduce puffiness and support the body’s natural detoxification processes throughout these hormonal shifts.
For both men and women, consistency is what delivers the most noticeable results. Just as you wouldn’t expect one workout to transform your fitness, lymphatic support works best when it becomes part of your routine. Even a few minutes several times a week can help maintain healthy circulation, encourage lymphatic flow and leave you feeling lighter, more energised and balanced.
When should you reach for a lotion versus an oil, and does it make a difference to the results?
DL: Both can be effective, but when it comes to supporting lymphatic drainage, I believe the formula itself is just as important as the texture. Whether you choose a lotion or an oil, look for products that contain targeted active ingredients that help stimulate microcirculation and support lymphatic flow.
Ingredients such as coffee extract are particularly beneficial, as they’re known for their energising and circulation-boosting properties, helping to encourage movement within the tissues while complementing massage techniques.
The choice between a lotion and an oil often comes down to personal preference. Oils provide more slip, making them ideal for longer massage rituals, while lotions tend to absorb more quickly and are often preferred for daily use. What’s most important is selecting a product that not only allows for smooth massage movements but also delivers active ingredients that work synergistically with the treatment.
At Biotyspa, we always advocate for a results-driven approach: combining manual lymphatic massage with clinically backed actives such as coffee extract can help maximise the benefits, leaving skin looking smoother, more toned and less prone to fluid retention.
Ultimately, consistency is key—the best product is one you’ll reach for regularly and incorporate into your daily wellness ritual.

Our Biotyspa Reviews

In the name of research, we had to trial their DIY at-home kits, here are our honest reviews:

Biotyspa Body Spa Kit, $79

"As someone who loves a day spa, I’d happily book in every week, but as a girly pop who values financial stability, I have to get creative...Thankfully, the BIOTYSPA Spa Kit scratched that itch and delivered a surprisingly spa-like experience from home.
The exfoliating glove is gentler than many others I've tried, but still gets the job done. In fact, it was exactly what my skin needed during winter, when it's feeling a little more sensitive than usual. Paired with the exfoliating shower gel, it provides the perfect level of daily exfoliation.
The scent instantly transports you to a luxury spa, while the formula lightly buffs away dull skin without feeling harsh. And the finishing touch? The Hydration Lotion. It seals in all the goodness from your exfoliation routine, leaving skin feeling soft, nourished and deeply hydrated.
If you're searching for a gift for someone who loves a little self-care, or simply wants to bring the spa experience home, this kit is an easy winner." - Chloe, Senior Content Specialist.

Biotyspa Body Sculpt Kit, $135

"I am among the cohort of people who only remember they have limbs that need looking after in winter. Though ‘body care’ should not be seasonal. This sculpting kit by Biotyspa is a perfect example of that because lymphatic drainage should be a consistent practice (especially for someone like me, who as Deborah explained, holds a lot of fluid retention thanks to hormonal shifts in my body).
This body sculpting ritual is inspired by the French ‘palpate and roll’ sculpting technique. It’s meant to help release fluids, flush out toxins and reduce water retention, something that as I age, I am noticing more on my body.
This was a really interesting at-home (in the shower actually) experience. I first tried it on my legs as that’s where I’m seeing a lot of dimples and loose skin at the moment. I’m also seeing and feeling that water retention in my stomach.
Admittedly, I went a little hard with the suction cup (a cautionary tale; make sure you don't press down too hard), so I will revisit this area, but I swiftly moved to my belly, where I get a lot of bloating/hold more fluid here.
I'm not sure if it was placebo, but even after the first use, I felt like my tummy looked less, droopy? It almost gives it an instantly tightening effect.
I think that over time with consistent practice (along with my gym sessions) it will help my belly look and feel more toned. Because a gentle reminder on what Deborah said above - lymphatic drainage isn’t a quick fix or a substitute for healthy lifestyle habits! Plus, the consistent blood flow movement is wonderful" - Sadaf, Senior Beauty Editor.
