If you’ve ever felt like your skin suddenly started
ageing quicker than you’d like (hi stress, sugar, and sleep deprivation!), you’re not imagining it.
Intrinsic ageing, the kind that happens quietly beneath the surface, is driven in part by A.G.E.s (advanced glycation end-products), and it shows up as loss of elasticity, fine lines, and often a subtle “why do I look so tired all of a sudden?” kind of vibe.
And while there are lifestyle factors that are in our control (such as
ensuring we have enough sleep, reducing our stress levels and minimising sugar in our diets), there are now skincare brands that are innovating ingredients that can help manage intrinsic ageing too.
But does it live up to the clinical claims? As a dermal clinician, I put it to through it's paces - here are my thoughts.
SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Interrupter Ultra Serum

The latest addition to SkinCeuticals' acclaimed A.G.E. line, this serum is formulated to fight the visible signs of intrinsic ageing caused by advanced glycation end-products (A.G.E.s).
This ultra-light serum promises to:
Visibly improve elasticity across three key facial zones
Reduce the appearance of fine lines by 19%
Enhance skin smoothness by 40%
Deliver a massive 73% boost in hydration within one hour
First Impressions
Straight out of the gate, this serum feels luxe. The texture is ultra-light, almost like a fluid-lotion hybrid. It absorbs quickly without tackiness, making it ideal for layering, especially when incorporating other actives into a skincare routine.
The packaging is classic
SkinCeuticals: minimal and clinical. But what really stood out was the formulation - a powerful blend of 30% proxylane, rhamnose, and antioxidants all working in synergy to target glycation (a lesser-known but hugely impactful contributor to intrinsic ageing).
So this serum isn’t just about softening fine lines, it’s tackling the biochemical cascade that causes them.
With consistent long-term use, I expect an improvement in the firmness, hydration and resilience of skin, boasting an overall “lifted but not tight” quality. For best results, I would recommend combining this step with retinoids, clinical treatments and (of course) a healthy lifestyle.
Formulation and Feel
The formulation is lightweight but with a silky slip that makes it easy to apply and layer. It absorbed seamlessly into the skin within seconds, leaving no residue or pilling. Most importantly, it plays well with other ingredients - which I think is crucial if you want to incorporate it alongside other actives.
One of the biggest wins for me? It’s surprisingly gentle. Despite its ingredients, I didn’t experience any redness, tingling, or sensitisation - even when my skin was feeling a little reactive post-treatment.
It feels like the kind of serum I’d be able to trust on compromised or ageing skin that needs support and/or anyone that can’t tolerate retinoids but still wants age management skincare that ticks all the boxes.
And yes, the hydration hit is real. Within the first hour, my skin looked noticeably smoother and more radiant, although I haven’t used it for long enough to see long-term results.

Who Should Use SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Interrupter Ultra Serum?
From a clinician’s perspective, this is a standout in the pro-grade anti-ageing space. I think it would be particularly great for clients navigating intrinsic ageing, where skin needs support across elasticity, glycation, and hydration all at once. It’s rare to find a formula that delivers corrective results without leaning too hard into actives that can overwhelm compromised or ageing skin. This strikes that balance.
I’d recommend this serum post-treatment (especially after lasers, needling, or peels) to help reinforce hydration, smoothness, and recovery without irritation.
It’s ideal for clients who want visible results without navigating the downtime or learning curve of stronger exfoliants or retinoids. Although personally, I would combine it with both.
Dermal Clinician Tip: Combine It With A Retinoid
Where this serum really earns its place in a professional routine is in how well it partners with a retinoid.
Retinoids remain the gold standard for boosting cell turnover and collagen production, but they can also leave the skin compromised, especially as we age. That’s where A.G.E. Interrupter Ultra shines: it doesn’t compete with your retinoid, it
complements it.
With hydrating, barrier-strengthening, and anti-glycation ingredients, this serum creates a more resilient foundation for retinoid use. It helps offset potential dryness, irritation, and dullness, making your active treatments more tolerable and effective over time.
So if you want to boost your age-management routine and are already doing all the right things, including using a retinoid, this serum could be a good way to up the ante.
