I’m a big believer in skin care for your neck and décolletage, but it's OK to feel sceptical about neck products, too.
I’ve definitely been there. Like, what's wrong with my neck? Does it really need its own skincare routine? Is it all just a marketing ploy? Do my toes need skin care as well?
No, your toes do not need skin care (except for sunscreen when they're exposed), but the neck area is a different story.
Often, we don't realise how much we've neglected something until we look back on it with hindsight. The neck and décolletage area is one of those things, because it's a part of the body that is exposed to a lot of UV, resulting in damage from years of cumulative sun exposure.
That's where neck care comes in. Keep scrolling for everything you need to know about taking care of the skin on your neck.
How Is the Skin on Your Neck Different to Your Face?
Neck care might feel like just another thing you're being told you have to do, but truth is, our necks have been copping it for decades.
The skin on your neck is thinner and a little more sensitive than the skin on your face. You won’t find as much collagen on your neck either, and the skin can become dehydrated as it contains less sebaceous glands that secrete oil.
These things combined with gravity and incidental sun exposure explain why the skin around the neck area can have an aged or sagging appearance, and is extremely prone to pigmentation and UV-induced signs of ageing including fines lines and wrinkles.
Unfortunately, there is only so much skin care can do once skin damage is present. Advanced clinical skin treatments are often required to see a visible change, so you need to be realistic about skincare results if the area hasn’t been looked after to begin with. This is why prevention is key.
