Do You Really Need Skincare Products for Your Neck?

I’m a big believer in skin care for your neck and décolletage, but it's OK to feel sceptical about neck products, too.

I’ve definitely been there. Like, what's wrong with my neck? Does it really need its own skincare routine? Is it all just a marketing ploy? Do my toes need skin care as well?

No, your toes do not need skin care (except for sunscreen when they're exposed), but the neck area is a different story.

Often, we don't realise how much we've neglected something until we look back on it with hindsight. The neck and décolletage area is one of those things, because it's a part of the body that is exposed to a lot of UV, resulting in damage from years of cumulative sun exposure.

That's where neck care comes in. Keep scrolling for everything you need to know about taking care of the skin on your neck.

How Is the Skin on Your Neck Different to Your Face?

Neck care might feel like just another thing you're being told you have to do, but truth is, our necks have been copping it for decades.

The skin on your neck is thinner and a little more sensitive than the skin on your face. You won’t find as much collagen on your neck either, and the skin can become dehydrated as it contains less sebaceous glands that secrete oil.

These things combined with gravity and incidental sun exposure explain why the skin around the neck area can have an aged or sagging appearance, and is extremely prone to pigmentation and UV-induced signs of ageing including fines lines and wrinkles.

Unfortunately, there is only so much skin care can do once skin damage is present. Advanced clinical skin treatments are often required to see a visible change, so you need to be realistic about skincare results if the area hasn’t been looked after to begin with. This is why prevention is key.

How to Look After the Skin on Your Neck.

Before we get onto products that can be beneficial for your neck, let’s quickly chat through a few easy ways you can look after your neck starting now.

1. Don’t expose your neck area to the sun. That would be my number one recommendation. Sunscreen is just one part of being sun safe. Seek shade, wear protective clothing and reapply sunscreen as directed. Always read the label and follow directions for use. You know the drill.

2. Don’t wear fragrance on your neck and lie in the sun. Fragrance contains alcohol and this will power up the sun’s harmful rays to deliver maximum damage to the skin. Basically, it's like screaming at the sun PLEASE ATTACK MY BEAUTIFUL SKIN! It may also lead to a skin condition called Poikiloderma of Civatte, which causes skin to break down and become discoloured.

3. Moisturising your neck area is important. You can either do this with a hydrating cream specifically formulated for the neck area, but your face moisturiser is fine, too. I would look for a hydrating cream that contains ingredients such as antioxidants and/or peptides.

4. Use a face serum on your neck, although patch test first. This is especially important for any serums containing active ingredients. Apply in the same way you would skin care on your face.

5. Exfoliate your neck, a few times a week is plenty. Have you ever noticed how facials almost always extend from your face to your neck/décolletage? Taking your skin care down to the neck and chest, including your exfoliants, should be mandatory!

Best Skincare Products for Neck.

While neck skin care may seem like a lot, when applied consistently, it can help prevent a range of common skin concerns.

However, it must be said - you can easily use many of the products you already own for your face and your neck. There’s no need to feel overwhelmed by it all... but I do wish I had started using these products on my neck in my 20s.

1. Dermalogica Neck Fit Contour Serum.

This is a really cool neck product. It’s a serum with a roll-on feature like a deodorant, but for your neck. Perfect for those who actually want a dedicated neck serum in their routine to tackle the signs of ageing.

Dermalogica Neck Fit Contour Serum is formulated with antioxidants and peptides (which is what we want). But what I’ve noticed most about this product is the applicator is a great way to force me into using a serum on my neck. I leave it on my work desk and apply in the morning, it's so easy. It’s also not sticky and sinks in really well.

2. Cosmedix Illuminate & Lift Neck and Decollete Treatment.

Cosmedix Illuminate & Lift Neck and Decollete Treatment is the ultimate neck cream. While I feel like I chat about it all the time, it’s because I love it.

This product has a very thick and extremely nourishing texture, and is formulated with a strong vitamin C derivative which is handy if pigment is a concern.

A little goes a long way too, so you can spread it along your neck and décolletage and it won’t run out after a week. And like any good neck cream, it definitely includes peptides, an anti-ageing ingredient most skin types should tolerate.

3. Skinstitut Ultra Firming Eye and Neck Cream.

It's an eye cream, with benefits.

Skinstitut's Ultra Firming Eye and Neck Cream is a peptides-filled, budget-friendly cosmeceutical product you can use on both your eye area and your neck area. It's very good for spot treating areas of concern, too.

So... Do Neck Creams Really Work?

Neck care is important, but remember, prevention is much easier than attempting to repair damage - especially from the sun.

If your damage is already visible, clinical treatments such as chemical peels and laser are likely to help.

But for anyone after an at-home option, wearing sunscreen and applying topical retinol, peptides and antioxidants to the neck area can be beneficial.

Because it's true what they say: Your face really does end at your tits.
