So I know what you’re thinking, “Gerard, you have some luscious locks - why are you writing this Beauty IQ!?”
Well, that’s what I’d like you to think. But the truth is, I have gone through my fair share of medications, topical treatments, clinical appointments and hair styles to address and cover my receding hairline!
A few years ago, and then exacerbated through the stresses of the pandemic, I noticed my hair starting to recede - along with most of the male population.
Well that didn’t quite work for me - I feel a real sense of identity with my hair and it receding in my 20s was not what I envisioned for myself.
I tried to tell myself those old tales that it’s “your mother’s side” that determines whether you start to bald or not, but I wouldn’t settle for that.
After going through the horrific experience that was a hair clinic - think cold, detached and unsympathetic; and then the more common Finasteride medication - I found that I suffered from the side effects; I started going down the topical and supplements route and I did see some success.
But, to be honest, I lost the drive to try and solve what felt like a never ending spiral of hair on the floor.
So over the last few months, I changed tact - I cut my hair short, changed the style and tried to cover it up.
So colour me curious when I heard our much loved Kérastase was coming out with a Genesis Homme Collection designed to reduce hair fall in men.
Especially because the original Kérastase Genesis collection is one of our top-selling ranges.
What Is Kérastase Genesis Homme?
The Genesis Homme collection is all about a two step approach - it targets the reason for hair fall in men while also providing thickening and texturising products that will give you greater confidence in the short term.
What’s more, it’s simple - three products and that’s it; all in super discreet and sleek packaging.
But why do we need a collection for men I hear you ask - hair is hair surely?! Think again!
When you read further on the science of hair fall, it comes down to a pretty simple equation - hormones.
Kérastase Genesis for Men.
Hair fall in both men and women is down to a condition called androgenic alopecia - it’s genetic unfortunately (so maybe there is some truth in the old tale).
The really short explanation is that men are continually producing testosterone throughout their lives and making a by-product called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which shrinks the hair follicles and makes it hard for them to actually live.
Simply put - women and men have a difference in genetics that means hair loss in women is not as common.
After years of research, Kérastase has now released a collection targeting hair fall in men.
It’s not like us to be so specific about products for men and women, but as with the science above, these products were developed specifically with the needs of cis men in mind, due to the targeted nature of the formulation.

But if you’re keen to know more, here’s my first thoughts when I tried out the new Kérastase Genesis Homme Collection.
1. Kérastase Genesis Homme Bain thickening Shampoo.
The Kérastase Genesis shampoo is potentially the best shampoo I have ever used and I am not exaggerating.
I can be really hit and miss with shampoo - some cause me irritation, some have that squeaky sound after and some require more than a double cleanse.
This one not only cleanses the scalp, but it also thickens and volumises to give you that much needed confidence boost for your daily life.
Ingredients such as creatine strengthen the hair fibres and ginger roots boost hair cell turnover and stimulate the scalp. It’s like a spa for your head!!
I don’t even need to mention the smell and the texture - to die for!
A little goes a long way too so it’s amazing value.
