An Expert's Verdict On This Insta-Famous Hair Tool

From bold colours to crazy styles, Instagram has birthed many hair trends. Some good...and some best quickly scrolled past.

But the latest taking over my feed is more than just a trend - it’s the actual hair tool behind it. Yes, I’m talking about those silky-looking mermaid waves created by the equally insta-famous tool, the Mermade Hair Waver.

What Is The Mermade Hair Waver?

Launched last year as the brand’s first product, the $89 tool is the brainchild of Australian beauty entrepreneur Tara Simich. In less than a year, it’s popularity has skyrocketed to become one of the world’s most in-demand hair styling tools.

A triple barrel heat tool, it’s the ultimate wave wand and even better, it's incredibly easy to use. So if you haven't quite mastered curling your hair, this is the perfect tool for you.

But does it live up to the hype? Here’s the lowdown on what you need to know.

When Did This Style Become...Cool?

“I first saw it on Kim Kardashian about two years ago. It’s a great way to keep the length of your hair whilst creating a wave,” says hair stylist and makeup artist, Jade Kisnorbo.

“This is rare as normally you lose length if you introduce any kind of wave.”

It was 2018 when we started to see the shift from those perfect and voluminous Victoria’s Secret-style waves into something a bit...different. More texture. More modern. And it’s showing no signs of slowing down.

While beach waves are a bit messy, undone and effortless, mermaid waves look closer to the actual ripples in the water. A bit glossier. And it looks just at home on a red carpet or night out as it does with your matching loungewear on the couch.

How Does It Work?

The tool itself is designed to be easy to use, but the insider secret to replicating those glossy, bouncy waves you see all over your feed is actually in the prep.

You can jump straight in with your natural hair, but for a professional finish, Jade recommends taking a little bit extra time to do it properly.

“Smooth your hair over and blow-dry it straight to remove any frizz as it’s a styling tool rather than designed to change the texture of your hair,” she says.

Once you have styled, she advises being fairly liberal with hairspray. ELEVEN Give Me Hold Flexible Hairspray and R&Co Outer Space Flexible Hairspray are both great strong-without-being-stiff options. This will ensure the wave lasts all day (and night!) and looks silky-smooth rather than fluffy.

When it comes to using the actual Mermade Hair Waver, it couldn’t be much simpler.

  • Prep hair as advised.

  • Split hair into small sections.

  • Clamp in the barrels, hold for about seven seconds, then release.

  • Repeat to the ends of your hair for all sections.

  • Lock in with a generous spritz of hairspray.

How close you place the clamp after the first one depends on the finish that you want. If you’re after true mermaid waves a la Kim Kardashian-West, then make sure you reclamp directly underneath the last wave bend for constant ripples.

If you prefer a slightly more beachy finish, then leave an inch or two off the ends to keep them straighter.

Does It Work On Short Hair Though?

The insta-famous tool is suitable for all hair types and lengths.

The difference will just be in the prep and the time it takes. Of course, the longer your hair, the more time it may take.

If you have thicker or curly hair, the best results will be if you blow-dry it first to ensure you’re starting with a smooth and frizz-free base. While it’s not quite clicking your fingers for a transformation, it’s an easier and quicker way to achieve waves.

And how does it compare to using a straightener? Well, your hairdresser may be able to perfect waves using a straightener, but the reality is there’s a reason they’re experts. (And if you can, then I bow down to you!)

Of course, it’s up to you what you find easier. No matter how many times I’ve been shown, I can never quite master the right way to twist or wind. I end up with curls that look more limp than luscious. The triple barrel curler makes it much easier to achieve and replicate for consistent results.

“It’s designed for the busy, time-poor woman who still wants to look amazing but just wants an easy and fast way of achieving this,” says Jade.

“I believe it nails the brief!”

This is one hair wave worth riding.
