Alpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot SerumAlpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum

So, my face and I have been keeping a secret for the last month.

We hated lying to you about why we were looking so glowy with all that 'drink five litres of water a day' nonsense. We truly did.

But when cult Aussie skincare brand Alpha-H gives you a bottle of their brand new game-changing product and swears you to secrecy, you do what you're bloody well told.

The product in question? The newly-launched Alpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum 50ml - a serum that promises to deliver your best skin while you sleep.

But is this serum worth the hype? Is it legit 'liquid gold in a bottle'?

And how is Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum different (or better than) the original Liquid Gold formula?

Here's everything you need to know about this buzzy new product, including our Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum reviews.

What Is Alpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum?

Alpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum 50ml is the newest launch from Alpha-H, the brand that made Glycolic Acid cool again when they released their best-selling Liquid Gold peel 20 years ago.

This industry-first overnight treatment serum contains both Glycolic Acid (an AHA or alpha hydroxy acid) and Granactive Retinoid (a form of Vitamin A) to resurface tired, dull, prematurely aged skin.

Basically, this chic white and gold bottle of serum reckons it can loosen and remove dead skin cells, clearing a path for the Granactive Retinoid to penetrate deeper into the skin to speed up its natural renewal process.

Alpha-H Midnight Reboot Serum Ingredients.

OK cool, but what's actually in this serum that makes it 'liquid gold'? Here's a quick ingredients breakdown:

  • 14 per cent Glycolic Acid - a small molecular AHA that stimulates skin renewal, supporting collagen and hyaluronic acid production.

  • One per cent Granactive Retinoid - a Vitamin A derivative that supports the skin turnover process to reveal brighter skin.

  • Collagen-boosting Tripeptide-5 - helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Australian Tazman Pepper - helps to reduce the overall appearance of redness.

  • Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) - a powerful antioxidant that helps to reduce the appearance of uneven tone and texture.

  • Ferulic Acid - a potent antioxidant that protects against free-radical damage.

  • Pyruvic Acid - helps to soften uneven skin tone and dull complexions.

You can learn more about AHAs like Glycolic Acid in this YouTube video below!

Wait... there's Glycolic Acid and Vitamin A in the... same serum, you ask? But I've always been told to use either acids or retinol...?!?!

I hear ya, and I too was worried about burning my face off using two powerful active skincare ingredients at the same time. But don't stress - there's a reason Midnight Reboot is an industry-first formulation.

According to Dr Michelle Wong (@labmuffinbeautyscience), studies have found AHAs and Retinoids can actually work better when combined in one product than either one on its own. In other words, Glycolic Acid and Retinoids are good mates.

Midnight Reboot makes the most of their friendship - without the irritation you'd expect from these actives - by combining them in a creamy base loaded with hydrating humectant and moisturising emollient ingredients.

How Is Midnight Reboot Serum Different to Liquid Gold?

The original Alpha-H Liquid Gold product is an exfoliating tonic formulated with five per cent Glycolic Acid to target skin texture and radiance. It can be applied to cleansed skin a few times a week using a cotton round or your hands.

Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum is a more complex serum that does the above and targets signs of ageing, with a higher percentage of Glycolic Acid (14 per cent) and the addition of one per cent Granactive Retinoid.

Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum has a slightly higher pH than the original Liquid Gold (approximately 2.8-3.0 to 4.0), which allows the higher percentage of Glycolic Acid to be used effectively, while minimising irritation.

Our Alpha-H Liquid Gold Serum Review.

When people (i.e. influencers) are raving about a product all over your Instagram feed, it can be hard not feel sceptical about whether it's actually any good. Especially when said product costs $129.

It's for this reason I've been using Alpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum 50ml twice a week (sometimes three times a week because YOLO) for a month so I can tell you what I honestly think of it.

And I really love this serum. I've loved it from the moment it first touched my usually irritable, Vitamin A fraidy-cat face.

Recap: I have dry skin that looks dull and patchy when I don't exfoliate.. which I don't do often because I've had bad experiences with acids before. And retinol. Gah. Scary.

I was expecting this serum to tingle like a #$@&%*! given it combines both strong skincare ingredients, but when I first applied a few drops of the creamy lotion-like serum on cleansed skin at night, I was genuinely surprised.

After consistent use, I feel a tingle, but nothing uncomfortable or irritating. I wait five minutes after applying before popping a moisturiser or face oil over the top, and wake up with noticeably more radiant, glowy skin the next morning. See?

(FYI I'm wearing sunscreen in the photo below, as you must do whenever using products with strong active ingredients in your routine.)

Heads up, the product has a distinctive scent that, to me, smells like a juicy, clove-stuffed Christmas ham straight out of the oven.

The spicy sweetness comes from the Pyruvic Acid - you'll notice it, but it doesn't put me off because it's a lot more pleasant than my other fave serum's off ham scent.

Now, because we all have different skin types and concerns, I forced four of my colleagues to put Midnight Reboot on their faces, too. Here's what they thought of it.

As someone with more of a sensitive skin type, I have to be wary of overdoing it on acids, so generally, I'd avoid a glycolic/retinol hybrid out of fear my face would fall off. But I couldn't resist giving this new product a try.

On first application, I had a very slight tingle, but haven't had the same sensation again, and my skin seems to be tolerating it well. Actually, 'tolerate' is the wrong word, my skin is responding well. I've got that next day glow, no sensitivity, and this serum slots into my weekly routine nicely.

I use it one to two times a week just with a moisturiser over the top at night, and I look even-toned, smooth and radiant when I wake up in the morning and slap my SPF on. I'd suggest this product is suitable for mildly sensitive skins like mine, and if texture, uneven skin tone and congestion are high on your list of concerns, this will probably make the perfect addition to your routine.

I’m a long-time fan of Alpha-H - when I found out about the Liquid Gold serum, I threw my hands up and literally yelled, ‘finally!’.

The first night I used the serum alone on dry, clean skin because I wanted to see how it would work without the influence of other serums. It left a tingling sensation (which I expected and enjoy) and easily sunk into the depths of my skin.

I like that the bottle is a generous 50ml in size (most serums you buy are only 30ml) AND it contains all the ingredients I want and need to address my main skin concerns - pigmentation and texture, both caused by acne scars.

I’m going to keep using this more consistently to measure the before and after of the appearance of my skin. So far, my skin feels like it's begun a renewal process, and I’m loving it!

Like most beauty junkies during covid, I've become obsessed with slathering on serums. So when our Senior Editor Amy asked if anyone over 40 would like to trial a new serum, I jumped at it quicker than Melbournians booking hairdressing appointments coming out of lockdown.

Due to being allergic to Vitamin C, I'm always looking for serious actives to make up for not being able to use Vitamin C serums for brightening and radiance. With buzz words like Glycolic Acid, Tripeptide - 5 and Granactive Retinoid, I had a feeling I might have found my new night time buddy in this serum...

Boy oh boy, hello my new little friend! This is one of the most luxurious serums I've ever used. It is wonderfully thick and a delicious pale yellow colour with a faint scent. It glides on so smoothly and makes my skin feel hydrated and cared for.

I have dehydrated, oily/normal, acne-prone skin. I'm also an almost-reformed pimple picker and am working on treating the residual post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

This serum is as sleek and luxe as we've come to expect from Alpha-H products. The product itself was much thicker than your usual serum (admittedly, it took me a couple of tries to squish the dropper with enough pressure to get enough product into the pipette - we got there!).

I switched from using my prescription retinoid twice a week to once a week so I could fit this serum in without accidentally causing my face to fall off. I found the formula easily sunk into my skin, despite the thicker consistency.

It definitely started tingling from the get-go, but I personally found it far more bearable than your classic Liquid Gold. After every use, I've noticed a youthful plumpiness. Over time, I've also noticed fading in my dark spots.

And that is everything there is to know about the new Alpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum.
