The Difference Between Our 3 Best-Selling Alpha-H Products for Seriously Glowy Skin

alpha h liquid gold vs liquid gold serumalpha h liquid gold vs liquid gold serum

Ask any beauty editor for their favourite all-rounder glowy skin product and they'll probably say Alpha-H Liquid Gold.

Why? Because the cult chemical exfoliator is just that good.

Formulated by Aussie skincare brand Alpha-H, Liquid Gold is consistently one of our best-selling products at Adore Beauty. It contains glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (or AHA) that loosens up dead skin cells on the surface of your skin to reveal shiny new skin cells underneath.

Yes, this product feels like tiny ants are biting your face (this slightly uncomfortable sensation is also known as 'the tingle'), but the result is plumper, smoother, more radiant looking skin.

For a while, life was good. Getting that glycolic acid glow was simple... until Alpha-H went and launched two other very good glycolic acid products:

Alpha-H Beauty Sleep Power Peel and Alpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum.

Yeah. It's confusing.

So, if all three of these products contain the same dead skin cell-eating ingredient, does that mean they do the same thing? Or are they different? And how am I meant to know which one to buy? (Please tell me I don't have to buy all three...)

We hear you, and we're here to help. (And no, you don't need all three.)

Ranked from beginner to advanced, keep scrolling for a simple recap of these Alpha-H exfoliating products, including which one's best for your skin.

1. Alpha-H Liquid Gold.

What: Alpha-H Liquid Gold - Never used glycolic acid before? This cult exfoliating toner will legitimately blow you away.

Fast facts:

  • Liquid Gold is a great beginner chemical exfoliant, or for anyone who wants an effective product that isn't too expensive.

  • Contains 5 per cent glycolic acid to exfoliate the surface layer of the skin for a brighter, smoother skin appearance, plus liquorice extract and silk proteins.

  • The overnight results are instant - people say they wake up with a new face after using Liquid Gold...

  • With consistent use, Liquid Gold can reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven skin texture and dullness.

  • It's fairly affordable at $55.95 for a 100ml bottle that will last you forever.

  • There are over 2,000 reviews for this product on Adore, with customers rating it 4.6 out of 5 stars. Noice.

How to use Alpha-H Liquid Gold:

Soak a cotton pad in the toner and swipe it on cleansed skin once a week, always at night. Slowly increase to every second or third night if your skin can tolerate it. And remember, too much burning isn't a good thing when it comes to exfoliating.

Apply other hydrating serums or moisturisers on top if you like. This is called 'buffering' and it's a great idea if you haven't used glycolic acid products before because it will buffer the effects to minimise any irritation.

2. Alpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum.

What: Alpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum 50ml - A powerful exfoliating and anti-ageing serum that's double the strength of the original Liquid Gold.

Fast facts:

  • This Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot serum targets the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven skin texture and dullness, as well as signs of ageing like fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.

  • At $129 for 50ml, it's the next step up from the original Liquid Gold in strength and price.

  • Even though this serum is strong, the creamy formula makes it suitable for those with dry skin, sensitised skin or anyone who usually finds active skincare ingredients too harsh.

  • Contains 14 per cent glycolic acid AND 1 per cent granactive retinoid, a very gentle and stable form of vitamin A that increases cell turnover.

  • Usually, vitamin A and glycolic acid would be too strong in the same product, but the Midnight Reboot formula combines them with hydrating humectant and moisturising emollient ingredients to minimise irritation.

How to use Alpha-H Liquid Gold Midnight Reboot Serum:

Apply a few drops of this serum on cleansed skin once a week. Slowly increase to every second or third night if your skin can tolerate it. You can also apply moisturiser over the top for extra hydration.

3. Alpha-H Beauty Sleep Power Peel.

What: Alpha-H Beauty Sleep Power Peel - An overnight at-home peel product that combines glycolic acid AND retinol. It's a lot.

Fast facts:

  • Make no mistake, this is a high-performance face peel for experienced active skincare users (i.e. beginners, come back once you've finished a bottle of Liquid Gold, yeah?).

  • It's the same price and volume as Midnight Reboot - $129 for 50ml - but it's also the strongest of the three.

  • Got sensitised skin and/or don't enjoy a hardcore glycolic acid tingle? Go for Midnight Reboot serum and leave this peel for more robust skin types, including dry, oily, acne-prone and ageing skin.

  • The creamy overnight mask delivers noticeably smoother, plumper, brighter skin, but also works on the appearance of acne and congested pores, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and skin elasticity over time.

  • Power Peel has the same 14 per cent concentration of glycolic acid as the Midnight Reboot serum, but it also contains .5 per cent retinol, a form of vitamin A that's stronger (and more irritating) than Midnight Reboot's granactive retinoid.

How to use Alpha-H Beauty Sleep Power Peel:

Apply a pea-sized amount of the peel on cleansed skin one night a week. Slowly increase to two nights a week, but only if your skin can tolerate it. You can also apply moisturiser over the top for extra hydration.
