The New Dyson Airwrap Is *Finally* Here & We Have Some Thoughts...

A bouncy, fresh-out-of-the-salon blow wave has always been one of my favourite hair looks.

My skill level at recreating the look at home? Next to none, until I bought my first Dyson Airwrap a few years ago.

When the Dyson Airwrap first came out, I knew I had to get my hands on it. I've been an avid Dyson Airwrap complete lover ever since.

I love that I can style my hair from wet to dry in 20 minutes, without extreme heat, and without sacrificing on volume and shine.

But if I HAD to nitpick, I did have a few teeny tiny Dyson Airwrap pet peeves.

While you are spoilt for choice when it comes to Dyson Airwrap attachments, I really only used 2-3 attachments MAX at any given time, leaving at least 3 sitting in their box, just chilling.

And although the curls looked AMAZING when freshly styled, the Airwrap Dyson longevity of the style sometimes didn’t last if the curls weren’t properly set, or the hair was too damp when being styled.

So imagine my reaction when the top-secret new Dyson Airwrap Complete Multi-Styler arrived at my door a few months ago.

I defs let out a little squeal of excitement.

Basically, the Dyson hair scientists and engineers read my mind, and looked into how they could make the already-epic Dyson Airwrap™ Styler Complete even better.

Enter, the new Dyson Airwrap Complete Multi-Styler Nickel Copper - with everything you love from the original design, plus re-engineered attachments and technology for an even faster, smoother and more effective styling experience.

Before I even opened the Dyson Airwrap box, my first question was... how much is this little doll going to set me back?!

After finding out the new-and improved Dyson Airwrap Styler would be retailing for $100 more than the OG, I was keen to see what new features Dyson had in store for us.

Plus, I needed to answer the $899 question: Is the Dyson Airwrap worth it?

Cue the road test.

What Is the New Dyson Airwrap?

Dyson Airwrap attachments Dyson Airwrap attachments

For those who don’t remember the hype behind the Dyson Airwrap launch, let’s recap.

As the name suggests, the original Dyson Airwrap™ Styler Complete was an all-in-one styling tool that can dry, curl, wave and smooth your hair, all without using any heat.

It took 200 engineers and 642 prototypes for Dyson to develop their Coanda effect technologywhich uses high-speed air to create a cylinder-like vortex that pulls hair towards the attachments.

In other words, the Dyson Airwrap literally does the work for you.

Fast forward to 2022 and the new-and-improved Dyson Airwrap Complete Multi-Styler has undergone some key tweaks and upgrades to make your styling experience even easier.

The first-of-its-kind hair tool still helps you style your hair faster and in more ways and with less heat, but now, all the attachments have been redesigned based on customer feedback.

You can expect more precise shaping, curling and smoothing, faster styling with NEW attachment features, PLUS the new added ability to hide flyaways like the Dyson Supersonic.

IMPORTANT: The new Dyson Airwrap is replacing the original model from July, 2022.

New Dyson Airwrap vs the Original Airwrap.

If you have an original Airwrap and are wondering how the new one is different, here's the quick version.

New vs original Dyson Airwrap similarities:

  • Both utilise a high pressure motor that is able to deliver hair styling without extreme heat.

  • How hot does Dyson Airwrap get? Built-in temperature control ensures airflow is measured 40 times per second, keeping the temperature is consistently kept at 150 degrees.

  • Both are multi-styler tools that utilise the aerodynamic Coanda effect to attract, wrap, smooth, straighten or curl your hair.

  • Like the original Airwrap, the new Dyson Airwrap comes in short and long barrel options.

New vs original Dyson Airwrap differences:

  • Price - Raised to $899 to account for the re-engineered attachments and technology.

  • NEW hair dryer attachment - The brand new Coanda smoothing and drying attachment works to dry hair conceal frizz/flyaways.

  • So, can you blow dry your hair with the Dyson Airwrap? Yes, but if you're thinking 'do I need a Dyson hair dryer and Airwrap', know that the Dyson Airwrap drying attachment isn't as powerful as the Dyson hair dryer itself.

  • NEW curling barrel attachments - Remember how you used to have to swap the barrels to curl each side of your face? Now, all you have to do is switch the airflow from clockwise to anticlockwise using the rotating cool tip at the top of the attachment.

  • BETTER brush attachments - The re-engineered smoothing and straightening brush heads use enhanced Coanda airflow to reduce frizz.

  • NEW colour - You can still get a Dyson Airwrap with pink, however the signature Dyson colourway will now be a very sophisticated, gender-neutral copper and nickel combo.

Dyson Airwrap Attachments.

Hair straightener aside, you really don't need any other hair tools (including a hair dryer) when you own a Dyson Airwrap set.

The new Airwrap comes with two less attachments (from 8 down to 6).

But they all have been optimised to do more with less, based on the feedback from Dyson Airwrap reviews.

Let's go through each attachments, what's new (and what's the same), and what to use each one for:

  • NEW Coanda smoothing dryer: This dual purpose attachment can be used as a hair dryer to take hair from wet to damp OR to smooth flyaways like the flyaway attachment on the Dyson Supersonic. Genius!

  • BETTER soft smoothing brush: Designed with fine hair in mind, this attachment provides a smooth finish.

  • BETTER firm smoothing brush: Designed with thick hair in mind, this attachment provides a straight finish.

  • NEW 40mm barrel: Perfect for loose curls or beach waves, with one barrel for curling on both your left and right.

  • NEW 30mm barrel: If you want voluminous curls, this attachment will become your new BFF. Also can curl on your left and right using the one barrel.

  • SAME round volumising brush: The only attachment that hasn't been changed, reach for this if you’re after a big, bouncy blowout that looks like you’ve walked out of the salon.

How to Use Dyson Airwrap.

Is Dyson Airwrap easy to use?

The new model definitely makes it easier, but a heads up, it takes some practice to really nail how to use the Dyson Airwrap.

But once you take the time to learn it, doing your hair with this all-in-one tool couldn't be easier. Or faster.

You can watch how I use the new Dyson Airwrap in the video tutorial below:

Changing the attachments is super easy with a toggle button that is located on the top section of the device.

Simply slide the button to 'unlock' the attachment heads and then move the button to “locked” when the attachment is safely secured to the Airwrap device.

Switching the airflow direction of the barrels is easy with a twist of the cool tip. Plus, you can turn your dryer attachment into a flyaway smoother by simply pushing the copper bar.

Plus, learning how to clean the Dyson Airwrap filter is super easy. Simply twist off the end part to clean the filter using a damp cloth.

But probably the biggest tip I can give you on how to use the Dyson Airwrap is around mastering the Coanda effect with the curling barrels.

Rather than wrapping hair around the barrel, the key here is to grab your section of hair from the end, and hold it next to the barrel.

Let go, and you'll see how the Coanda effect automatically pulls the hair onto and around the barrel for you.

My New Dyson Airwrap Review.

All in all, I really do love the new Dyson Airwrap device.

As someone who also owns the original Dyson Airwrap, the new model looks and feels very similar when you open the box.

But after actually using the new Dyson Aiwrap, here's what I noticed:

  • The combo of the re-engineered brushes and increased Coanda effect meant that my hair was much easier to style, as it allowed the hair to be suctioned to the device at a much quicker and stronger rate.

  • Having the one curling barrel with a changeable toggle saved SO much time when curling my hair, this was a game changer for me!

  • In terms of the types of styles you can create with the new Airwrap, they are pretty much the same as the original tool.. however I would say the biggest styling game changer is the Coanda smoothing feature.

  • Not only does this attachment dry and smooth the hair, it also leaves it looking super shiny which is a bonus effect that I personally loved.

  • This genius attachment is able to help you get a smooth, polished look with way less frizz, something that the OG Airwrap wasn’t able to offer.

Take a look at my Dyson Airwrap before and after photos to see how it gives me that true salon-worthy style.

Final Verdict… Is the Dyson Airwrap Worth It?

Got the original Airwrap? Don't stress.

It's still an amazing device that will give you a quick and easy styling experience, without exposing your tresses to extreme heat.

However if you're still tossing up whether the Airwrap is worth they money, or want to upgrade your existing model, the new Dyson Airwrap is even better than the original.

Personally, the new 2-in-1 Coanda smoothing attachment and not having to change the barrels alone are enough to justify the price tag.

Yes, $899 will always be a lot of money to spend on a beauty tool.

But if you style your hair most days of the week, the new Dyson Airwrap is well worth it in my opinion.
