About the Author

West African born now Melbourne based. Dog Mumma and nap lover.

If you have dry, tight, itchy skin, you’ve probably wondered what the best and quickest way to give your skin a moisture boost is.

For Karine Amer, dry skin was brought on by her acne medication, but the dry condition of her skin never really went away.

In this routine, we’ll show you the morning skincare routine Karine uses to nurture her dry, sensitive skin before she starts her day. These product suggestions have come from Karine’s Dermatologist, as well as her own experience of trial and error.

What causes dry skin?

Some people are more prone to dry skin than others, but there are some general factors that can promote or exacerbate dry skin types. Like Karine, dry skin can be brought on by particular medications, but usually the causes are a lot more generalised.

Factors that can contribute to causing dry skin can include changes in temperature or humidity, certain soaps and chemicals, an unbalanced pH, sun exposure and genetics. This list is not exhaustive, but it does point to some potential solutions when it comes to forming your morning dry skin routine.

The best way to soothe dry skin is with a simple routine using hydrating and emollient ingredients, followed by a healthy amount of SPF

Karine’s Morning Skincare Routine for Dry & Sensitive Skin:

Step 1: Cream cleanse

Step 1: Cream cleanse

Karine starts her routine with a gentle, cream cleanser. She uses several pumps of the Avène Gentle Milk Cleanser, which has soothing and anti-irritant properties. After massaging this into the face for 30-60 seconds, rinse off.

Step 2: Calming toner

Step 2: Calming toner

Next up in Karine’s routine is the Kiehl's Calendula Herbal Extract Toner 250ml. This is an alcohol-free toner that won’t dry out your face at all, and will also reduce inflammation and blemish causing bacteria. Apply several drops of this toner to a cotton pad and swipe it over your skin. This toner will help to keep your acne at bay.

Step 3: Reviving concentrate

Step 3: Reviving concentrate

Karine uses the Kiehl's Daily Reviving Concentrate 30ml to help replenish her dry skin. It’s infused with Ginger and Sunflower Oil, and is used to combat dullness. Massage several drops into your skin well, in an upwards motion.

Step 4: Gel cream

Step 4: Gel cream

The Avène Hydrance Aqua Cream-In-Gel is perfect for dehydrated and sensitive skin types. It has a luxurious high-end product feel and glides onto the skin easily.

Step 5: Eye cream

Step 5: Eye cream

For eye cream, Karine uses the Avène DermAbsolu Youth Eye Cream 15ml. She taps this product into her skin lightly with her ring finger underneath and above her eye. This cream combats fine lines, dark circles and puffiness.

Step 6: SPF 50+

Step 6: SPF 50+

Karine’s final step is the Skinstitut Age Defence SPF50+, which hydrates while providing ample protection against the sun’s harmful rays. It also contains Vitamin B3, which helps minimise pores and uneven texture.
