Your neck, while not always your first thought when it comes to skincare, tends to show age even before your face does due to neglect. A youthful-looking neck requires a multi-pronged approach.
Prevent From Within
Your skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside your body, which means if you put good in, you get good out. Neck skin is much thinner than facial skin and thus requires the one-two punch of an inside job and topical treatment.
Ensuring your diet is chock-full of omega fatty acids, which aid in collagen production, is essential. Omegas can be found in foods such as:
- Cold-water fish
- Fish oil or flaxseed supplements
- Citrus fruits
- Leafy greens
Prep and Resurface
The skin on the neck is delicate, so you don't want to treat it harshly. Pulling and scratching at it can do more harm than good. Gentle resurfacing treatments such as alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acids exfoliate without irritation in lower concentrations and are tremendously effective at preventing visible signs of ageing on the neck in particular.
Always be sure to cleanse the neck when cleansing the face, morning and night. Following cleansing with an AHA exfoliator such as Alpha-H Instant Facial to help resurface and minimise visible signs of ageing.
Prevent Free Radical Damage
The neck is often vulnerable to UV damage, as SPF application is usually concentrated on the face. Exposure to sunlight leads to exposure to free radicals, which break down the skin’s natural collagen and elastin. Loss of collagen and elastin contribute to all visible signs of ageing: sagging skin, lines, wrinkles, and so forth.
A vitamin C serum, such as SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF, provides antioxidants to the skin and helps fight and repair free radical damage. Phloretin is a potent antioxidant molecule, so combined with vitamin C (a proven fighter of free radicals) and ferulic acid (a skin brightener), this pair is a great example of an ideal age-fighter for the neck.
Prevent UV Exposure
Sunscreen is one of the best ways to fight visible signs of ageing anywhere on the body, but particularly on the neck. The thinner skin on the neck allows UV rays to penetrate more easily and cause damage more quickly. You ideally want to apply an SPF of 30 or higher, such as Clarins Sunscreen Control Cream SPF 30, to the neck daily before sun exposure to protect against ageing.
Follow each of those steps to the best of your ability and you’ll be seeing tauter, firmer, younger-looking skin on your neck in no time!
