This summary describes the classic presentation of rosacea as well as areas less commonly affected.
Rosacea is a skin condition that predominantly affects the face. The hallmark of rosacea is facial blushing. This blush lasts significantly longer than a normal reaction to a hot day or an embarrassing experience.
While regular blushing is usually accompanied by increased facial heat, a rosacea sufferer's redness is accompanied by skin sensitivity, irritation, itchiness, visible capillaries, and even stinging sensations.
Rosacea on the Face
Rosacea-based facial redness often appears in a butterfly pattern. The 'butterfly' is centred on the T-zone, and its wings extend to the sides of the face. In most cases, the signs of rosacea occur on the:
- Eyes (known as 'ocular rosacea', one of the four types of rosacea)
If you suffer from rosacea, these areas will exhibit many of the following signs and symptoms (ordered in likelihood of appearance):
- Persistent facial redness
- Facial flushing
- Visible blood vessels
- Skin sensitivities (combined with stinging and burning sensations)
- Dry, flaky, itchy skin (seborrheic dermatitis)
- Acne-type breakouts (red bumps and pustules)
- Thickening of the skin
This is the classic presentation of rosacea. Typically, symptoms are confined to the face. It's very uncommon for a rosacea sufferer to develop these symptoms in other areas.
Rosacea on the Body
A survey by the National Rosacea Society in the U.S. found that a small number of patients experience rosacea on other areas of the body, such as the:
You'll notice that all of these areas are close to the usual facial presentation of this condition. While it's highly unusual for symptoms of rosacea to appear in these areas, it's possible. For confirmation of your condition and the areas affected, please consult your doctor.
