No anti-aging effects experienced - 03-09-2012 by

Thank you to Adore Beauty and Philosophy for the opportunity to trial the Help Me Retinol Night Treatment. I have dry, sensitive skin with oiliness around the nose and, at the age of 56, have plenty of wrinkles, sun spots and sagging skin on which to test such a product, so I was very excited to try it out. The travel-sized 7 gram tube came as part of the “Great Skin Is In” Kit, so this treatment was used in conjunction with “Purity Made Simple” cleanser and “Hope in a Jar” moisturiser.

The packaging of this treatment is practical. The tube came sealed with a foil and the lid had a pointy side for piercing the foil. For optimal results this product should be stored at room temperature (15 to 30 degrees Celsius) so despite the tube size, there could be problems using it when travelling, depending on the climate.

The treatment was scent-free and had a lotion consistency. It was absorbed readily by my skin. I could not feel any moisturizing effect from it. Retinol has been credited with improving skin texture, tightening pores, lessening brown spots, smoothing out wrinkles. However, the literature indicates that even with prescription doses, you would need at least four weeks to see any results. In cosmetic doses, at least twelve weeks would be needed. Given the limitations of the review period, I used this cream for under four weeks and could not see any improvements. The retinol is encapsulated in a patented microsponge system that releases the active ingredient gradually for less irritation. My sensitive skin was not upset by the cream at all. Retinol is also credited with clearing congested pores and assisting with acne. I don’t suffer from acne so I couldn’t test this claim.

Overall, I did not find any improvement to the appearance of my skin while using this treatment. In truth, I’m a bit of a skeptic when it comes to claims made about anti-aging creams, so I was not really expecting any changes and I was not disappointed by the outcome. Of course, I will continue to use the cream and perhaps the changes are yet to occur, but I remain a skeptic. I probably would not repurchase this treatment.

Easy-to-use starter retinol - 11-09-2012 by

I used this product as part of the Philosophy 3-product trial/starter kit, along with Purity Made Simple cleanser and Hope In a Jar moisturiser. I've had experience with other retinol products so I was interested to try this one.
- fluid/creamy texture, easy to apply and spread.
- no sting/irritation
- no fragrance
- a little goes a long way
- I can't see much difference in my skin so far (about 3-4 weeks).

I would reserve judgement on whether or not it works until the product is completely finished. I may even come back and post an update. I do know that if you're interested in using a retinol product, this one might be a nice one to start with.

Gentle, non-irritating retinol treatment - 22-09-2012 by

The most exciting thing for me about trialling this retinol treatment was that it doesn't sting! I was apprehensive as I have had bad experiences in the past, but this particular formula has slow-release technology which means it works gradually over an 8-hour period. I only experienced mild irritation on one occasion where I applied it without thinking after I had just exfoliated.
I apply a pea-sized or smaller amount of this cream each night after cleansing. It has a light, almost mousse-like texture, and absorbs very quickly into the skin. It is not moisturising, and I applied hope in a jar moisturiser directly after this.
Unlike stronger retinol treatments, this is slower acting and it took a while before I saw visible results. I have quite sensitive skin when it comes to these kinds of products, and I would rather go slow and steady. After about 4 weeks of use I noticed that the pores on my nose, cheeks and chin definitely looked more refined, and my skin texture seemed firmer and more even.
Overall this is a good retinol treatment for those with sensitive skin, but it may not deliver results quickly enough for some. This is my first positive experience with a retinol product, and I am happy with the results, especially at what I think is a reasonable price for the results it yields.
