Hair straightening creates a smooth, bend-free finish and helps tame flyaways and frizz. Even those with thin or fine hair can enjoy the benefits of straightening without sacrificing volume. Using the correct products before and after straightening helps ensure fuller hair with plenty of body and movement.
Use a heat protectant
Using any hot tools on hair can be incredibly damaging, especially to fine hair, which is prone to breakage. Direct heat puts the hair shafts under pressure, making them more likely to split or break. To prevent this from happening, you must always use a heat protectant before using a hot tool.
evo Icon Welder Hot Tool Shaper protects hair from high temperatures whilst leaving it smoother and more manageable. If you want to increase the volume in your hair, consider using ghd Total Volume Foam, which protects against heat too.
Straightening your hair
When straightening your hair, work in sections. Try not to pull the hair down towards your scalp. Aim to straighten the hair upwards and outwards instead to maintain your hair’s natural body and movement.
You can use a root lift spray such as MoroccanOil Root Boost to increase volume. Root Boost can be used on either damp or dry hair prior to straightening. To avoid undoing the root lift, avoid straightening hair too close to the root. Focus on the mid lengths of the hair instead.
Once your hair has been straightened, it may appear to fall quite flat right away or go limp a few hours later. Use a teaser brush such as the evo Tyler Boar Bristle Teasing Brush to lightly backcomb the roots of your hair for height and volume. Wait until your hair has cooled fully before doing this, as hot hair is more prone to breakage.
Once you've lightly teased your roots, you may want to use a volumising product such as Sachajuan Volume Powder to add texture and movement to your hair. Powder will mattify your hair, so skip this step if you prefer a shiny finish.
Next-day straightened hair
If you want your straightened hair to last an extra day, use Christophe Robin Instant Volumising Mist to freshen hair and help maintain body. It’s a lightweight mist that's perfect for in between washes.
Straightened hair can very quickly fall flat and limp if you don’t use the correct haircare products before and after straightening. Products can help to maintain the style whilst allowing your hair to have volume, body, and movement.
