She developed an interest in formulating cosmetics through working with her uncle, a chemist, who taught her how to cleanse her skin not with the harsh bar soaps of the day, but with oils and gentle botanicals, beginning her career in ultra-nourishing skincare. She worked with her uncle to develop and create his deeply hydrating face cream formula, which she began wearing religiously and dubbed the Super-Rich All-Purpose Cream due to its’ ability to restore, refine, and elevate the skin’s health. After a brief foray into acting, Estée felt her true calling was not to see her name on a marquee, but on a bottle, and made creating skincare her sole focus.
The Birth of the Brand
Estée Lauder got her start by bringing the products she formulated to a salon she frequented after her stylist inquired as to how she kept her skin looking so beautiful. These products were so impressive to the stylist that she hired Estée to start the salon’s first beauty concessions and with that, Estée Lauder was in business. She expanded her customer base through word-of-mouth, acting as her own publicist by bringing her first four products to hotels and salons and acting as a one-woman crew to bring her elegantly packaged, simplistic-yet-stunning line to the entire city.
From Humble Beginnings To An Empire
From those first forays into marketing her products came high demand, and soon Estée Lauder was running a full one-woman business. With the help of her family, she was able to capitalize on that success to create one of the biggest beauty empires in the world. Estée Lauder began expanding in 1960 and is now sold in over 150 countries across the globe.
