But Seriously, Do I Really Need a Cleanser?

As someone with oily skin I have to admit that the subject of this guide makes me feel a little bit stressed.

However, if you’re getting into skincare I think it’s perfectly fair to wonder, do you need cleanser? (Or any product for that matter).

There are three key questions I usually receive about cleansing:

  • Do I need a cleanser?

  • Should I use a cleanser both morning and night?

  • What does a cleanser do for my skin?

Honestly, I don’t blame anyone for wondering, is cleanser necessary?

Let’s face it, cleansing is pretty boring and expensive. If I didn’t know how important it was I probably wouldn’t do it as regularly either.

So, here’s a run down of what cleansing *actually* does, when you need to do it, and an intro into a few of our favourite cleansing products for every skin type.

The Case Against Cleansing

The case against cleansing isn’t completely unfounded.

One of the main arguments against regular cleansing suggests that it overstrips the skin and can leave it unbalanced, particularly if it is already dry.

Now, this can certainly happen if you are overcleansing or using the wrong cleanser for your skin type.

For instance, my sensitive skin doesn’t seem to like SLS (at all). I’ve also found that over time I break out if I use an oil cleanser on it’s own.

So, for those of you who think that overzealous cleansing just leads to dryness and breakouts, we hear you, but you might just be using the wrong cleanser...

So, Why Can’t I Just Wash My Face with Water?

Look, if you want to keep it simple and you have fairly normal skin, you can go ahead and wash your face with water and a washcloth. Particularly in the morning, using water is fine.

However, there are plenty of reasons why you should absolutely be using a cleanser in the evening.

There are plenty of things that end up on our face by the end of the day that water alone cannot remove (e.g. oil, sweat, dirt, pollutants, makeup, SPF, etc.)

So, what does cleanser do? Lab Muffin Beauty Science, gives the helpful analogy of thinking of our faces as a dirty pan - you can’t get the grease off alone, you need detergents (or surfactants!) to achieve a thorough clean.

An oil cleanser is designed to help break down and oil soluble products sitting on the surface of the skin, such as makeup.

This makes it easier for you to go in with your second (water-based) cleanser, which should contain surfactants (found in most gel or foaming cleansers) to actually clean your skin.

What I’ve just described is a process called double cleansing, which is particularly useful when removing makeup and great for those with oily or acne-prone skin

Why Should I Use a Facial Cleanser Instead of Soap?

Soap is a sink staple that's always on hand for a quick wash. Soap is fast and easy to use. It's cheap, and it gets the job done. But should you be using soap on your face? Quick answer, no we don't recommend it.

Soap is alkaline, with a pH often between 9 and 10. When skin is washed with soap, the acid mantle is temporarily disrupted. Over time, skin's pH levels will restore on their own. Healthy skin can re-acidify within a few hours after use of alkaline treatments such as soap. However, this ability to repair is slowed with regular use of soaps, eventually leading to dryness and irritation. You should use a face cleanser in place of soap, as cleansers work just as effectively but within a pH range similar to that of your skin.

Does Everyone Need To Double Cleanse?

No, If you went a day sitting inside without wearing makeup or SPF, a single cleanse would probably do.

However, if you want to reap the benefits of a properly cleansed face (less breakouts, less congestion, exfoliation, improved hydration, etc.), double cleansing at night is the way to go.

In the morning feel free to stick to water, or just use a basic water-based cleanser if you’re particularly oily.

Our Favourite Cleansers and Cleansing Tools

Below we’ve listed 8 of our favourite cleansers and cleansing tools for every skin type, so hopefully you can perfect your cleansing routine for AM and PM.

They make cleansing for faces of all varieties super easy.

Double cleansing requires a first-step oil cleanser that is really going to help you take the day off. It’s important to note that you should apply this first cleanser with dry hands onto dry skin. A formula we love to recommend is the Medik8 Lipid-Balance Cleansing Oil, because of its light foaming texture and its ability to rebalance the complexion. When you use this oil cleanser with water it transforms into a milky emulsion that rids the skin of dirt, oil, impurities and stubborn makeup. It’s an ideal first cleansing step that leaves the skin feeling refreshed and hydrated.

The asap gentle cleansing gel is easily one of our top cleansers for sensitive skin. However, it is a cleanser we would recommend for absolutely every skin type. We love that this cleanse iis formulated without soap or SLS, so it doesn’t cause drying, pH imbalance, or irritation. It includes ingredients like Aloe Vera, White Tea and Glycerine, to calm, soothe and boost your skin’s moisture levels. It’s a bona fide staff favourite with a genuinely refreshing formula that whisks away dirt and impurities effortlessly.

Those with oily skin tend to think they need something hardcore to keep their skin clean and refreshed. However, the key is to find a formula that does so without disturbing the barrier and keeping your skin hydrated and balanced. Enter the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Foaming Gel. This French Pharmacy favourite is ideal for those with oily skin as it combines Zinc Pidolate to purify the skin and Thermal Spring Water to hydrate and minimise irritation. It’s ideal for minimising bacteria and breakouts and can be used on a daily basis.

Having combination skin isn’t exactly the best of both worlds. However, you can keep your skin happy with a cleanser that hydrates the skin while providing some light exfoliation. This helps to deal with dryness, as well as any excess sebum in your T-Zone. The cleanser we recommend for combination skin types is the Dermalist Ultra Hydrating Lactic Cleanser. This milky-gel cleanser uses Lactic acid to hydrate and exfoliate the skin, boosting your overall complexion. It also contains super ingredients such as Vitamin C, Niacinamide and Green Tea to really give your skin an overall glow.

Extremely dry and sensitive skin types often require a cleanser that is nourishing and gentle. In this case a highly emollient cream cleanser can be highly beneficial in reinforcing the barrier. Our favourite cleanser for delicate barriers is the Skin Virtue Pure Nourish Cleanse. This rich creamy cleanser helps move dirt, build up and debris without disturbing the barrier or causing irritation. It uses Vitamin E and Sweet Almond oil to replenish the skin and provide damage repair as well as antioxidant protection.

Congested and acne prone skin sometimes requires a bit of extra exfoliation in the form of a cleanser. For this we recommend incorporating the Murad Age Reform AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser into your routine on a semi-regular basis. Using this cleanser occasionally will help to lift dead skin and impurities, using a combination of AHA’s, BHA’s and gentle physical exfoliants. This triple action exfoliant clears pores and leaves skin feeling smooth and radiant. Plus, you can also use this on your body anywhere you get congestion.

A key way to improve your skin is by using a tool that helps you exfoliate and massage the skin as you cleanse. That’s why we recommend adding the Foreo The Luna 3 for Normal Skin to your routine. This silicone cleansing device uses micro-current technology to whisk away impurities. It’s a super hygienic and convenient way to cleanse and firm your skin. It’s a must-have skincare tool that will leave your skin bouncy and glowing!

If an expensive cleansing device isn’t in your budget range, we recommend trying the Face Halo Original. These reusable microfiber makeup removers can effectively move away heavy makeup and diminish buildup and impurities using just water. Not only are they machine washable and eco-friendly - they are also suitable for all skin types and can replace up to 500 single use makeup wipes. Go in with one of these bad boys before your initial cleanse for super effective results.
