I really can’t describe how satisfying it is to scrape my tongue. Honestly, it’s actually pretty gross, but seeing all that gunk come off my tongue makes me so happy. Trust me, once you get past how strange the whole experience is, you will be hooked!
What exactly is tongue scraping?
In the most simple terms, a tongue scraper is a tool that allows you to more effectively remove built-up bacteria from the surface of your tongue, which increases the quality of your oral hygiene.
Scraping your tongue in the morning and night reduces the occurrence of Mutans Streptococci and Lactobacilli, which are the nasty bacteria that cause bad breath. As well as improving breath freshness, removing this bacteria will also help with your overall oral health, including preventing cavities and gum disease, and even improving your sense of taste.
You simply drag your tongue scraper from the back of your tongue, forwards – look away now if you’re already grossed out enough, ’cause there’s a visual demonstration coming…
Who should use it?
Everyone can benefit from a little scraping, but it will be especially helpful to people who have drier mouths. My mouth tends to be pretty dry thanks to damaged saliva glands from radiation therapy. I often wake up with an unpleasant thick feeling in my mouth (stop me if this is getting too gross) and I would be so paranoid about having bad breath all day.
Brushing my teeth and flossing are obviously important and can’t be replaced as part of a good oral hygiene routine, but nothing compares to the feeling of literally scraping excess gunk out of your mouth!
But where did tongue scraping come from?
I know it sounds like some strange new invention created by evil marketing executives in an attempt to make people feel bad about yet another part of their body, but tongue scraping has actually been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years.
Ayurveda is one one of the world’s oldest healing systems. It encompasses a lot of different elements including diet, massage, acupuncture and herbal medicine, and yoga. The great thing about Ayurveda is that it promotes health and wellness by creating a balance between mind, body, and spirit. Essentially it says that cleaning the toxins off your tongue will help to detox your whole body, and even detox your soul.
OK, but can’t I just use a toothbrush…?
Good question, but toothbrushes are created to work on hard surfaces. In order to give your tongue a really effective clean, you need a more rigid surface. Plus, the Black Chicken Remedies tongue cleaner is made from copper, which is a bacteria resistant metal, making it the best material for tongue cleaning. And it’s also really easy to clean, just run it under hot water after every use.
Happy scraping, you guys!
