The best Dermalogica routine if you’re in your 20s
In your 20s, the main concern I see is problematic skins (early 20s), with excess oil and breakouts, or clients (late 20s) interested in beginning their anti-ageing journey. So in this age group I will try to cater to both areas of concern.
Special Cleansing Gel: This is a great cleanser for your 20s. It is safe for all skin types but works magic on combination skins, which is likely at this point. Youâre probably still experiencing a little bit of shine and a few breakouts, but are ready to try and work on your skin’s future. It does lather up a bit so it will make your skin feel nice and clean without feeling tight, plus it is soap free! Itâs great to try after those big nights out as this will get all your make-up off and can be used on the eyes! This cleanser’s antiseptic properties help calm down any breakouts, without stripping the skin and can be used with your Clarisonic! Use this cleanser morning and night.
Skin Prep Scrub: Great for that slightly oilier skin, or skins that are blackhead-prone. It contains corn cob meal to manually exfoliate the skin and aloe vera to help soothe and prevent sensitivities. This will make a significant difference where clogging is occurring (nose, chin etc) and leave your skin feeling soft, smooth and even-textured. If this is your first exfoliant, you may want to start with the microfoliant that can be used daily and isn’t as harsh. This product should be used 2-3 times a week.
Skin Smoothing Cream: This moisturiser is a medium-weight cream, recommended for drier skins and prematurely-aged skins. It is also a great consistency for younger skins suffering from dyhydration that still may be prone to breakouts or are concerned about using a thick moisturiser. It contains silk amino acids to help smooth and improve your skin’s texture as well as aloe (one of my favourite hydrating properties). Not only does aloe vera improve moisture content, but it also promotes healing and prevents the fine lines that can be associated with dryness. In cases where your skin is more oily, the active moist may be more suited but I recommend using an SPF during the day with mattifying properties and then using something a little thicker at night to give your skin that added moisture at this critical time.

As our skin starts to mature, the first sign we see is a loss of water. Our skin becomes more dehydrated as our skin is finding it hard to hold on to its water content. This is also shown to us as those little fine, feathery lines on the forehead and cheeks. You may still be experiencing the odd breakout so we’ll take that into consideration too!
Essential Cleansing Solution: This is a lovely, creamy cleanser that doesn’t foam up. This is a perfect cleanser to start using when you’re noticing those first signs that your skin needs some a little something extra. This cleanser uses vitamins C and E to help replenish dry skin and maintain a healthy moisture level without making you feel more oily. The other great thing is it’s completely water-soluble, so very easy to wash off gently. This cleanser can be used morning and nightly.
Gentle Cream Exfoliant: This is a step up in exfoliation and should be applied in a thin layer over the face, avoiding lip and nostril area (more sensitive), and left on for 10 minutes, once a week. This has a lovely mix of actives such as your lactic and salicylic to get right into those pores and de-clog. It also has pineapple extract that works like a Pac man to eat away dead skin. I love this because it’s like a mini-peel, it gives your skin that refreshing glow! Also a great pick-me-up for pigmented skins.
Intensive Moisture Balance: Again, it is dependant on your skin type, but I find that at this stage, skin becomes slowly matured. My sun bunny clients in particular are starting to notice some premature ageing at this time! This moisturiser is designed to reduce those signs of aging, containing vitamin A, which increases skin’s elasticity (love it) and vitamins C and E to help fight off free radicals! This can be used nightly and daily, if needed, under an SPF.

Skins at this stage may start to feel some real changes. The skin has started to lose some elasticity, it may be feeling dull, and signs of aging are starting to appear. At this stage I also get a lot of clients concerned with pigmentation so let’s put this all together!
Tri Active Cleanse: This cleanser is amazing for hyperpigmented skin. It its name suggests, it has 3 actions; cleanse, brighten and clarify. All the words you want to hear in a pigmentation-fighting cleanser! It has a healthy dose of lactic acid that helps exfoliate the skin on a deeper level, without drying, and increases your hydration content. It also contains niacinamide known for its skin lightening properties! This will give you that fresh boost you’re after! This cleanser can be used morning and night time.
MultiVitamin Thermafoliant: A clear favourite of mine! The Multivitamin Thermafoliant is a great combination of manual and chemical exfoliation. A mixture of fine mineral powders, lactic and salicylic acids work on multiple layers of the skin. I often use this when I feel my skin needs something a little more active. The wow factor is that once mixed with water, it generates slight heat to help better penetration of products. This perfect balance leaves your skin so smooth and supple. This exfoliant should be used 2-3 times a week. If this is your first interaction with Dermalogica you may want to start with the Microfoliant to build up your skin’s tolerance.
Skin Hydrating Booster: Now is the perfect, perfect time to start adding those little extra bits and pieces. This booster should be used nightly as your last step before moisturising or can be used under a mask for added benefits. This booster purely targets hydration. It has one of my favourite hydrating ingredients, hyaluronic acid, which holds 1000 times its weight in water to help plump up those fine lines!

Now our skin is considered to be quite mature and can become quite dry and may even become quite thin. One thing I begin to hear is “my skin feels sallow” so it’s important to put in those lovely firming ingredients and lots of moisturising properties.
Skin Resurfacing Cleanser: The magic, dual action cleanser for mature aged skin. This cleanser not only leaves your skin feeling fresh, but begins to exfoliate the skin at the same time with one of my fav cleanser ingredients: LACTIC ACID. This power ingredient will help accelerate turnover, and bring that healthy skin to the surface, allowing better penetration of your active ingredients. The Resurfacing cleanser can be used morning and night time.
Extra Firming Booster: Used in the same way as any Dermalogica booster, it can be used under your moisturiser nightly or under a mask for added penetration. This booster will increase surface firming with ingredients such as protein peptides that instantly revitalise tired and overworked skins! It helps increase circulation, healing and will strengthen a weakened skin. Perfect little goodie for the 50+ age group.
MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque: ALSO KNOWN AS THE LITTLE AMBULANCE IN A BOTTLE. Most likely one of the best masques going around. It’s been praised by the likes of Victoria Beckham and Jessica Alba. Let me add that the extra firming booster goes magically underneath this masque. It is packed with antioxidant vitamins to help skin recover from damage while still enhancing the skin’s natural barrier. A concoction of vitamins C, A and E give you the best results in anti-ageing, and promote that most supple skin by increasing collagen and elastin synthesis. AMAZING!

At this point, skin has become most mature and needs some TLC. Skins may become quite stressed and even become quite thin and sensitive. So it’s important if you haven’t used a skincare regime before to go forth slowly and test the waters! Here I’ll explain a good starting point:
Skin Resurfacing Cleanser: As mentioned above
Extra Firming Booster or Gentle Soothing Booster: Firming, as mentioned above. The soothing booster can be great at this stage, when the skin can become quite irritated and sensitive. It contains red raspberry and chamomile to soothe delicate skins and bring moisture without becoming oily. These two boosters can be alternated.
Super Rich Repair: A super-potent moisturiser that can be used at night time, or under an appropriate SPF in the morning. Like the rest of the Age Smart range, it is loaded with vitamins that help the production of both collagen for nice firm skin and glucosamine to help stimulate production of hyaluronic acid (our bodies’ own water retention). This is a great product for mature skins, where hydration is a key factor to plumping up the skin and giving your skin a pep up.
Important note: Everybody’s skin is different and each person will prioritiae their concerns differently. This is just a guide and in many cases, clients will be using products from different age brackets, considering their skin’s strength and key problems.
