How to properly prepare your skin for makeup

Ever spent hours applying makeup, only to have it fade away a few hours later? Or perhaps upon removal, your complexion is congested and irritated.

The trick is to prepare your skin for makeup. As well as having a good cleansing routine, there are certain products that should be applied before putting on cosmetics to ensure that your complexion is both cared for and can keep your look fresh and durable! Once again, Dermalogica steps up to the challenge…

1. Make sure your skin is super clean

Even if you’ve already performed your skincare routine, it’s worth dabbing some Dermalogica PreCleanse Wipes over your face. It’ll remove any lingering residue from your cleanser or moisturiser and mop up any excess oil, creating a nice, clean canvas.

2. Apply sunscreen

A good SPF is your number one anti-ageing weapon! Photo-damage leads to fine lines, dehydration and sun spots, so massage Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport SPF 50 into your face, neck and decolletage, paying careful attention to areas that burn easily like the nose, ears and chest. Designed for the face and body, Dermalogica‘s non-greasy formula is loaded with nourishing anti-oxidants (while being free from fragrance and colours) and absorbs quickly – no ghosting effect!

3. Prime, prime, prime!

The secret behind looking dewy all day long is to use a primer. It creates a barrier between your skin and your foundation, meaning that your makeup doesn’t fade away due to sweat or environmental factors. It will also even out any tonal issues, smooth away roughness and make pores look smaller. We particularly love Dermalogica Age Smart Skinperfect Primer SPF30, which not only does all of the aforementioned things but contains sunscreen for an extra wrinkle-fighting kick!

Expert tip

If you want to protect your skin and have long-lasting makeup, but don’t have the time to cleanse, apply sunscreen and then prime, choose a multi-tasking product. Dermalogica Sheer Tint SPF 20 provides skincare, sunscreen and shade-correcting benefits in one! With light, buildable coverage that’s ideal as a basic foundation, its hyaluronic acid and walnut seed extract improve the texture and hydration levels of your complexion, while SPF protects against burning and ageing. Available in three different, self-adjusting colours, Sheer Tint has a shade to suit every tone.
