Coming into winter, skin reactivity often increases. This is because the skin’s natural barrier may be weakened, allowing the harsh winter climate to effect us more.
If you’re experiencing discomfort, tingling and tightness (especially after cleansing the face), it might be time to simplify!
On average, we apply 12 products per day, which can contain irritants like fragrance, preservatives, essential oils and alcohol. This can leave the skin barrier reactive to external conditions like pollution, climatic conditions and changes in temperature.
Eau Thermale Avène is one of my favourite skincare ranges for sensitive skin. It’s specially designed to treat skin conditions ranging from sensitivity, to intolerant, atopic and psoriasis.
How many products is too many?
It all depends on your skin’s individual requirements, which is often determined by your skin type (oily, normal to combination, dry) and additional skin concerns such as ageing, dark spots, hydration, sensitivity or hypersensitivity.
The quantity of products is not the concern, but it’s important to choose the right one!
Where You Should Start:
1. Cleanse and remove makeup with a very gentle cleanser. I recommend Avène Extremely Gentle Cleanser – it’s designed for irritable hypersensitive skin, so you won’t react.
2. Soothe the skin with Avène Thermal Spring Water. It works to comfort everyday skin irritations including facial redness, itching and eczema.
3. Apply a hydrating, soothing serum to maximise results. I really like Avène Hydrance Serum because it helps to retain moisture in the skin for long term skin comfort.
4. Hydrate and nourish with a moisturiser for your skin type. I’d recommend Avène Skin Recovery Cream – it rapidly soothes irritations, nourishes and moisturises the skin while restoring the skin’s barrier protection.
Which products are staples for sensitive/reactive skin?
Try to stick to a skincare range which contains minimum ingredients and no irritants. You want a very simple program to soothe, calm and hydrate the skin.
When can I reintroduce more products to my regime?
Allow your skin time to recover. It takes about 21 days for the skin to turnover, so allow at least 3 weeks for your skin to restore itself – when your skin feels calm and comfortable again, and you don’t have any redness or irritation after cleansing the face, you should be fine to reintroduce your other products.
